Root Aphids
Various (Phylloxera, Rhopalosiphum)
📖 Description
Root aphids are among the most difficult plant pests to detect and control because they live entirely below the soil surface, feeding on plant roots. By the time above-ground symptoms appear, significant root damage has often already occurred. They are particularly devastating to container-grown plants, where their populations can build rapidly in the confined soil volume. Like above-ground aphids, they excrete honeydew, which attracts ants that farm and protect them. Root aphids can kill plants if left unchecked, and their soil-dwelling nature makes them resistant to foliar sprays.
⚠️ Symptoms to watch for
- Wilting despite adequate watering,Yellowing lower leaves and general decline,Stunted growth and reduced vigor,White powdery substance on soil surface near base,Ants frequently visiting the soil around the plant,Roots appear damaged with white insects visible
🩹 Treatment
- Drench soil with insecticidal soap solution (organic),Apply neem oil soil drench (organic),Beneficial nematodes applied to soil (organic),Unpot plant, wash roots, and repot in fresh soil (organic),Systemic imidacloprid soil drench (chemical),Apply dinotefuran to soil surface (chemical)
🌿 Organic treatments
- Drench soil with insecticidal soap solution,Apply neem oil soil drench,Beneficial nematodes applied to soil,Unpot plant, wash roots, and repot in fresh soil
🧪 Chemical treatments
- Systemic imidacloprid soil drench,Apply dinotefuran to soil surface
🛡️ Prevention
- Use sterile potting soil for repotting,Quarantine new plants before introducing to collection,Avoid reusing potting soil,Ensure pots have good drainage to prevent soggy conditions,Inspect roots when repotting or acquiring new plants

🦋 Natural predators
- Ground Beetles,Parasitic Wasps,Predatory Nematodes
🌱 Host plants
- Lactuca sativa,Solanum tuberosum,Various root crops
🔄 Lifecycle
- Root aphids reproduce parthenogenetically year-round in indoor environments.
- Females give birth to live young that immediately begin feeding on roots.
- Nymphs mature in 7-10 days and begin reproducing.
- Winged forms are produced when populations become crowded, flying to new host plants.
- In outdoor environments, eggs may be laid on roots for overwintering.
- Multiple overlapping generations occur continuously.
📅 Season
- Year-round
🔎 Appearance
- Tiny, oval, pale yellow to greenish-white insects found on plant roots and in soil.
- Often confused with mealybugs but are smaller and more mobile.
- May have a white waxy coating.

- High
🔁 Reproduction rate
- Rapid
