Tomato Russet Mite

Aculops lycopersici

Mites & Ticks (Arachnids) Moderate Risk 0.15-0.2 mm (adult female)

📖 Description

Tomato Russet Mite is a serious pest of tomato and other solanaceous crops across the Indian subcontinent, particularly severe in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Odisha where tomato is grown on over 800,000 hectares. The pest is a member of the Eriophyidae family — unlike spider mites, eriophyid mites have only two pairs of legs and are tiny (0.15-0.2 mm). The mite feeds on epidermal cells, causing characteristic russeting (silvery-brown discoloration) of leaves and stems. Damage typically starts at the base of the plant and progresses upward, often reaching the top only after complete defoliation of lower portions. Outbreaks are favoured by warm dry weather and water stress. The pest is particularly difficult to detect because (a) it is invisible to the naked eye, (b) early symptoms resemble water stress or nutrient deficiency, and (c) damage occurs rapidly — a heavily infested plant can defoliate within 7-10 days. IPM with early detection (hand lens inspection), sulphur applications (very effective against eriophyid mites), conservation of native predatory mites and removal of infested lower leaves provides effective control. The pest is most severe in continuous tomato cropping and stressed plants — crop rotation and proper irrigation management are key preventive measures.

⚠️ Symptoms to watch for

  • Browning and russeting (silvery-brown discoloration) of lower leaves and stems starting from base, papery texture of affected leaves, upward curling and drying of leaves, defoliation progressing from base to top, sunscald of exposed fruits, yield loss 30-50% in untreated fields

🩹 Treatment

  • Spray wettable sulphur 80 WP @ 3 g/L on lower foliage, apply neem oil 1% with sticker, use need-based acaricide when first symptoms appear, remove infested lower leaves

🌿 Organic treatments

  • Spray wettable sulphur 80 WP @ 3 g/L (very effective), apply neem oil 1% + 5 g/L soap, release predatory mites (Amblyseius) @ 5000/ha, apply Verticillium lecanii @ 5 g/L, remove and destroy infested lower leaves, conserve native predatory mites

🧪 Chemical treatments

  • Wettable sulphur 80 WP @ 3 g/L, Spiromesifen 240 SC @ 0.5 ml/L, Abamectin 1.9 EC @ 0.5 ml/L, Propargite 57 EC @ 2 ml/L, Diafenthiuron 50 WP @ 1 g/L, Fenpropathrin 10 EC @ 0.5 ml/L — rotate to avoid resistance

🛡️ Prevention

  • Plant clean nursery stock, rotate crops to break cycle, remove weed hosts (Solanum nigrum, Datura) around fields, balanced nutrition and irrigation, monitor with 20x hand lens, plant resistant varieties (Pusa Ruby, Arka Saurabh), avoid water stress

🪴 Affected plants

  • Tomato, Brinjal, Potato, Capsicum, Petunia, Other Solanaceae

🦋 Natural predators

  • Amblyseius spp. (predatory mites), Stethorus spp. (ladybird beetle), Scolothrips sexmaculatus, Predatory Thrips

🌱 Host plants

  • Solanum lycopersicum, Solanum melongena, Solanum tuberosum, Capsicum annuum, Petunia spp.

🔄 Lifecycle

  • Female lays 15-30 eggs on leaf surface.
  • Eggs hatch in 2-3 days.
  • Larvae feed for 1-2 days, then nymphochrysalis (1 day), protonymph (1-2 days), deutonymphochrysalis (1 day), adult.
  • Adult lifespan 15-20 days.
  • Total life cycle 6-8 days at optimal temperature (25-28°C); 15-20 overlapping generations per year.

📅 Season

  • Year-round in tropical tomato, peaks Mar-Jun and Oct-Dec during warm dry months

🔎 Appearance

  • Adult is a tiny, wedge-shaped, translucent yellowish-white mite with only two pairs of legs (typical of Eriophyidae).
  • Body is annulated (ringed) and appears dust-like under magnification.
  • Eggs are spherical, translucent.
  • Invisible to naked eye — must use 20x or higher hand lens.

💥 Damage level

  • Moderate

🔁 Reproduction rate

  • Very Rapid
