Rice Root Weevil
Echinocnemus oryzae
📖 Description
Rice Root Weevil is a soil-dwelling pest of rice across the Indian subcontinent, particularly severe in upland rice, direct-seeded rice and rice-wheat rotation systems of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha and Chhattisgarh. Both adult and larval stages damage the crop — adults feed on leaves creating characteristic window-pane feeding scars, while larvae feed on rice roots in the soil, reducing the plant’s ability to absorb water and nutrients. This dual damage (foliar + root) makes E. oryzae particularly damaging — even moderate infestations can significantly reduce yield through combined leaf area loss and impaired root function. Outbreaks are favoured by warm moist soil conditions and continuous rice cropping. The pest is more of a concern in upland and direct-seeded rice than in transplanted flooded rice — flooding suppresses larval populations by creating anaerobic conditions. IPM with soil application of biocontrol (Beauveria, Metarhizium) against larvae, foliar sprays against adults, crop rotation and flooding between crops provides effective control. Conservation of predatory ground beetles (Carabidae) is important — these beetles prey on soil-dwelling larvae and can suppress populations naturally.
⚠️ Symptoms to watch for
- Yellowing and stunting of plants, reduced tillering, poor root development with severed root tips, wilting during hot weather despite standing water, presence of adult feeding scars on leaves (window-pane), yield loss 15-30% in upland and direct-seeded rice
🩹 Treatment
- Apply carbofuran 3G @ 30 kg/ha at nursery or main field, install light traps @ 1/ha, spray neem oil 5 ml/L on adults, use need-based insecticide when 5 adults per plant
🌿 Organic treatments
- Apply neem cake @ 500 kg/ha at planting, spray neem oil 5 ml/L on adults, apply Beauveria bassiana @ 5 g/L to soil for larval control, apply Metarhizium anisopliae @ 5 g/L to soil, install light traps, conserve predatory ground beetles
🧪 Chemical treatments
- Carbofuran 3G @ 30 kg/ha (soil application at nursery or main field), Chlorpyriphos 20 EC @ 2 ml/L (foliar spray against adults), Phorate 10G @ 15 kg/ha (soil application), Imidacloprid 17.8 SL @ 0.3 ml/L (foliar spray against adults)
🛡️ Prevention
- Plant clean nursery stock, rotate crops to break cycle, fallow and flood field between crops, deep summer ploughing to expose pupae, destroy weed hosts around fields, monitor with light traps, plant tolerant varieties
🪴 Affected plants
- Rice, Upland Rice, Wild Rice, Some Grasses
🦋 Natural predators
- Ground Beetles (Carabidae), Spiders, Predatory Bugs, Parasitic Wasps, Birds, Frogs
🌱 Host plants
- Oryza sativa, Oryza rufipogon, Echinochloa crus-galli, Leersia hexandra
🔄 Lifecycle
- Female lays 100-300 eggs in soil near rice plants.
- Eggs hatch in 5-8 days.
- Larvae feed on roots for 30-45 days through 4 instars.
- Pupation in soil, lasting 10-15 days.
- Adult lifespan 60-120 days.
- Total life cycle 50-75 days; 3-4 generations per year.
📅 Season
- Year-round in tropical rice, peaks Jun-Oct (kharif) during active growth
🔎 Appearance
- Adult is a small greyish-brown weevil with mottled dark markings on elytra, characteristic snout and elbowed antennae.
- Larvae are white, legless, C-shaped grubs with brown head capsule, living in soil where they feed on rice roots.
- Pupation occurs in soil.
