Citrus Butterfly (Lemon Butterfly)
Papilio demoleus
📖 Description
Citrus Butterfly (Papilio demoleus), also called Lemon Butterfly or Lime Butterfly, is a major defoliator of citrus across the Indian subcontinent, particularly damaging in citrus nurseries and young orchards of Andhra Pradesh (Nagpur mandarin belt), Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Punjab and Assam where citrus is grown on over 1 million hectares. The larva (caterpillar) is a classic example of Batesian mimicry — early instars mimic bird droppings (dark brown with white markings) to avoid predation, while later instars are leaf-green to camouflage against foliage. When disturbed, the larva everts a forked orange osmeterium behind the head that emits a foul-smelling secretion to deter predators. Beyond direct defoliation, the pest is most damaging in nurseries and young orchards where complete defoliation can stunt growth or kill young plants. Mature orchards typically tolerate moderate infestations without significant yield loss. IPM with hand-collection of larvae, Bt applications against early instars, conservation of native parasitoids (especially the ichneumonid Trogus mactator which parasitizes late-instar larvae) and need-based insecticide use provides effective control. The pest is most active during the spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) citrus flushes.
⚠️ Symptoms to watch for
- Initial feeding on tender leaves by young larvae, complete defoliation of young nursery plants by older larvae, damage to flushing shoots in mature trees, reduced tree vigour and yield in young orchards, complete defoliation of nursery plants in severe infestation
🩹 Treatment
- Handpick larvae from young plants, install light traps @ 1/ha, spray Bacillus thuringiensis @ 1 g/L on young larvae, apply NSKE 5% in early evening, use need-based insecticide when 5 larvae per plant in nursery
🌿 Organic treatments
- Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki @ 1-2 g/L, NSKE 5%, neem oil 5 ml/L, Beauveria bassiana @ 5 g/L, hand-collect and destroy larvae and eggs, spray NPV if available @ 250 LE/ha, conserve native parasitoids (Trogus mactator)
🧪 Chemical treatments
- Emamectin benzoate 5 SG @ 0.3 g/L, Chlorantraniliprole 18.5 SC @ 0.3 ml/L, Novaluron 10 EC @ 1 ml/L, Indoxacarb 14.5 SC @ 0.5 ml/L, Dichlorvos 76 EC @ 1 ml/L (only for nursery), Acephate 75 SP @ 1 g/L
🛡️ Prevention
- Use nylon net (40 mesh) nursery covers, install bird perches to encourage avian predation, hand-collect larvae and eggs regularly, destroy crop residues after harvest, plant resistant varieties, conserve native parasitoids and predators by avoiding broad-spectrum insecticides
🪴 Affected plants
- Citrus (Sweet Orange, Lime, Lemon, Mandarin, Pumelo), Curry Leaf Tree, Other Rutaceae
🦋 Natural predators
- Trogus mactator (larval parasitoid), Ooencyrtus spp. (egg parasitoid), Spiders, Birds, Predatory Bugs
🌱 Host plants
- Citrus sinensis, Citrus limon, Citrus aurantifolia, Citrus reticulata, Murraya koenigii (curry leaf)
🔄 Lifecycle
- Female lays 50-150 eggs singly on tender leaves and shoots.
- Eggs hatch in 3-5 days.
- Larvae feed for 15-25 days through 5 instars.
- Pupation on host plant or nearby structure, lasting 10-20 days (longer in winter).
- Adult lifespan 15-25 days.
- Total life cycle 30-50 days; 5-7 generations per year.
📅 Season
- Year-round, peaks Mar-May (spring flush) and Sep-Nov (autumn flush)
🔎 Appearance
- Adult is a large, striking butterfly with pale yellow wings marked with black tiger-like stripes and a characteristic red and blue eyespot near the hindwing tail.
- Larva (caterpillar) is a bird-dropping mimic in early instars (dark brown with white markings) and changes to a leaf-green colour in later instars, with a forked osmeterium (orange, fleshy, Y-shaped organ) behind the head that everts when disturbed and emits a foul odour.
