Black Cutworm

Agrotis ipsilon

Soil Pests & Nematodes Moderate Risk 35-45 mm (larva)

📖 Description

Black Cutworm (Agrotis ipsilon) is an important soil-dwelling pest of seedlings across the Indian subcontinent, particularly severe in maize, cotton, vegetables and tobacco nurseries of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The larva is a classic ‘cutworm’ — it feeds at night, cutting young seedlings at or below soil level and causing characteristic ‘cut stem’ symptoms. A single larva can cut 10-20 seedlings in a night, often moving along a row and leaving a trail of fallen plants. The pest is particularly damaging in seedling nurseries (rice, tobacco, vegetables) where dense planting creates ideal conditions for larval movement and feeding. Outbreaks are favoured by warm moist soil conditions, weedy fields (which attract adults for oviposition) and continuous cropping. The pest is most active during the seedling stage (first 3-4 weeks after sowing) — once plants are established with woody stems, they are much less susceptible. IPM with hand-collection of larvae from soil around cut plants at dawn (the single most effective control measure), light trapping of adults, soil application of biocontrol (Metarhizium, Beauveria) and neem cake, and need-based insecticide use provides effective control. The pest is most severe in weedy fields — maintaining field sanitation and planting early to escape peak larval period are key preventive measures. Deep summer ploughing exposes pupae to sun and predators, reducing initial pest pressure.

⚠️ Symptoms to watch for

  • Characteristic cut stems of seedlings at soil level (larvae feed at night, cutting young plants at base), wilting and death of cut seedlings, holes in tubers and root vegetables, defoliation of lower leaves in older plants, plant stand loss 10-30% in outbreak years, complete seedling loss in severe infestation requiring re-sowing

🩹 Treatment

  • Handpick larvae from soil around cut plants at dawn, install light traps @ 1/ha for adult monitoring, apply neem cake @ 500 kg/ha at planting, use need-based insecticide when 5% seedlings cut, apply bait (bran + jaggery + insecticide) at seedling stage

🌿 Organic treatments

  • Hand-collect larvae from soil around cut plants at dawn (very effective), apply Bacillus thuringiensis @ 2 g/L as soil drench, apply Metarhizium anisopliae @ 5 g/L to soil, apply Beauveria bassiana @ 5 g/L to soil, apply neem cake @ 500 kg/ha at planting, install light traps, set up bonfires at dusk to attract adults, apply NSKE 5% as soil drench

🧪 Chemical treatments

  • Chlorpyriphos 20 EC @ 2 ml/L (soil drench around plants), Carbofuran 3G @ 30 kg/ha (soil application at planting), Quinalphos 25 EC @ 1.5 ml/L (foliar spray against climbing cutworms), Indoxacarb 14.5 SC @ 0.5 ml/L, Emamectin benzoate 5 SG @ 0.3 g/L — apply as soil drench or bait (bran + jaggery + insecticide)

🛡️ Prevention

  • Deep summer ploughing to expose pupae to sun and predators, plant early to escape peak larval period, maintain field sanitation (remove weeds that attract adults for oviposition), install light traps @ 1/ha to monitor adult emergence, intercrop with non-host, plant resistant varieties, use seed treatment with insecticide for early protection, practice crop rotation

🪴 Affected plants

  • Maize, Wheat, Rice (Nursery), Cotton, Pulses, Vegetables (Tomato, Cabbage, Chilli), Tobacco, Sugarcane, Potato, Various Seedlings

🦋 Natural predators

  • Ground Beetles (Carabidae), Spiders, Predatory Bugs, Birds, Frogs, Parasitic Wasps (Meteorus), Parasitic Flies (Tachinidae)

🌱 Host plants

  • Zea mays, Triticum aestivum, Oryza sativa, Gossypium hirsutum, Nicotiana tabacum, Solanum lycopersicum, Brassica oleracea

🔄 Lifecycle

  • Female lays 1000-2000 eggs in clusters on weeds, plant debris or soil surface.
  • Eggs hatch in 3-7 days.
  • Larvae feed at night for 25-40 days through 6-7 instars, hiding in soil during day.
  • Pupation in soil, lasting 12-20 days.
  • Adult lifespan 10-20 days.
  • Total life cycle 50-75 days; 4-6 generations per year.
  • Adults are strong fliers and migrate long distances.

📅 Season

  • Year-round in tropical India, peaks Mar-Jun and Sep-Nov during seedling establishment periods

🔎 Appearance

  • Larva is a smooth, greasy-looking, greyish-black caterpillar with faint lighter stripes along the body; has a pale stripe down the back and characteristic dark spots on each body segment.
  • When disturbed, larva curls into a tight C-shape (typical cutworm behaviour).
  • Adult moth is a robust, dark brownish-grey moth with characteristic dagger-shaped black mark near the centre of each forewing.
