Onion Caterpillar (Cutworm)

Spodoptera exigua

Chewing Insects Moderate Risk 25-35 mm (larva)

📖 Description

Onion Caterpillar (Spodoptera exigua), also called Beet Armyworm, is a polyphagous pest of onion, cotton, vegetables and other crops across the Indian subcontinent, particularly severe in onion belts of Maharashtra (Nashik, Ahmednagar, Pune), Gujarat, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh where onion is grown on over 1.2 million hectares. The pest is a generalist feeder attacking over 50 plant species including onion, garlic, cotton, tomato, chilli, cabbage, soybean and many weeds. Young larvae feed gregariously on leaf undersides creating characteristic ‘window-pane’ damage, while older larvae disperse and feed individually, completely skeletonizing leaves. The pest is particularly damaging in onion because larvae often feed inside the onion ‘neck’ (where leaves emerge from bulb), causing rot and bulb loss. Beyond direct defoliation, the pest is a vector of some plant viruses. Outbreaks are favoured by warm dry weather, weedy fields and continuous cropping. The pest has developed resistance to virtually all major insecticide classes (organophosphates, pyrethroids, carbamates, even some Bt toxins), making resistance management critical — rotate across modes of action and use NPV (SeMNPV) which is highly specific to Spodoptera and very effective. IPM with pheromone trapping of males, Bt and NPV applications against early instars, hand-collection of egg masses and gregarious larvae, and need-based insecticide rotation provides effective control. The pest is most severe in weedy fields — maintaining field sanitation is a key preventive measure.

⚠️ Symptoms to watch for

  • Window-pane feeding by young larvae on leaves
  • complete skeletonization by older larvae
  • holes in onion leaves with frass
  • defoliation in severe outbreaks
  • damage to bulbs and developing heads
  • transmission of some viral diseases
  • yield loss 20-40% in onion
  • complete defoliation in severe outbreaks

🩹 Treatment

  • Handpick gregarious early instars from plants
  • install light traps @ 1/ha and pheromone traps @ 4/ha for adult monitoring
  • spray Bacillus thuringiensis @ 1 g/L on young larvae
  • apply NSKE 5% in early evening
  • use need-based insecticide when 5 larvae per plant

🌿 Organic treatments

  • Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki @ 1-2 g/L
  • NSKE 5%
  • neem oil 5 ml/L
  • Beauveria bassiana @ 5 g/L
  • spray NPV (SeMNPV) @ 250 LE/ha (highly specific to Spodoptera)
  • hand-collect and destroy egg masses and gregarious larvae
  • install pheromone traps @ 4/ha for mass trapping of males

🧪 Chemical treatments

  • Emamectin benzoate 5 SG @ 0.3 g/L
  • Chlorantraniliprole 18.5 SC @ 0.3 ml/L
  • Novaluron 10 EC @ 1 ml/L
  • Indoxacarb 14.5 SC @ 0.5 ml/L
  • Spinosad 45 SC @ 0.2 ml/L
  • Lambda-cyhalothrin 5 EC @ 0.5 ml/L — rotate to avoid resistance (Spodoptera has high resistance to pyrethroids and OPs)

🛡️ Prevention

  • Deep summer ploughing to expose pupae
  • destroy weed hosts (Amaranthus, Chenopodium, Portulaca) around fields
  • plant early to escape peak larval period
  • install pheromone traps @ 4/ha for mass trapping of males
  • intercrop with non-host
  • plant resistant varieties
  • conserve native parasitoids and predators by avoiding broad-spectrum insecticides

🔄 Lifecycle

  • Female lays 300-600 eggs in clusters covered with brownish scales on leaf undersides.
  • Eggs hatch in 3-5 days.
  • Larvae feed for 14-21 days through 5-6 instars.
  • Pupation in soil, lasting 7-12 days.
  • Adult lifespan 7-14 days.
  • Total life cycle 25-40 days; 5-7 generations per year.
  • Adults are strong fliers and migrate long distances.

📅 Season

  • Year-round in tropical India, peaks Oct-Apr (rabi onion) and Jul-Sep (kharif vegetables)

🔎 Appearance

  • Larva is a smooth, greenish to brownish caterpillar with a characteristic dark stripe along each side of the body and a pale stripe down the back; has dark and light longitudinal stripes (variable).
  • Adult moth is small (25-30 mm wingspan), brownish-grey with characteristic mottled pattern and a small white spot near the centre of each forewing.
  • Often called 'Beet Armyworm' in some classifications.
