🪴Syngonium Macrophyllum

Syngonium Macrophyllum

Indoor Plants Difficulty: Moderate Air purifying

📖 About this plant

Syngonium macrophyllum is a distinct and highly sought-after species within the Syngonium genus, quite different from the common S. podophyllum cultivars. The most striking difference is the leaf shape — while most Syngoniums have arrow-shaped leaves, S. macrophyllum produces large, velvety, heart-shaped leaves reminiscent of Philodendrons. The leaves have a soft, matte, almost suede-like texture in deep green on the upper surface, while the underside is a rich pink-red that becomes visible when leaves move in a breeze or when viewed from below. This velvety texture and the dramatic red undersides make it one of the most tactile and visually interesting Syngonium species. As a rainforest understory plant, it requires more consistent humidity and warmth than common cultivars.

🛡️ Health & Safety

⚠️ Not pet safe ☠️ Toxic

Toxic to cats and dogs — calcium oxalate crystals cause oral irritation, drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing

Common issues

  • Very sensitive to low humidity (leaf edges brown and curl)
  • cold damage below 15°C (59°F)
  • slower growth than common cultivars
  • root rot from overwatering
  • mealybugs on velvety leaves
  • yellowing from direct sunlight exposure
  • leaf drop from sudden temperature changes

💡 Care tips

  1. This species demands higher humidity (60-80%) — a humidifier or terrarium setup works well.
  2. Unlike common Syngoniums, the leaves are heart-shaped, not arrow-shaped.
  3. The pink-red undersides are a stunning feature — display at a height where they're visible.
  4. Avoid direct sunlight which damages the velvety leaf surface.
  5. Water with room-temperature filtered water.
  6. Provide a moss pole for climbing to encourage larger, more mature leaf development.
  7. The velvety texture means water droplets spot the leaves — water at the base rather than overhead.
