Galtonia (Summer Hyacinth)

Bulbs & Tubers Difficulty: Easy

📖 About this plant

Galtonia candicans, the Summer Hyacinth, is an elegant late-season bulb that produces tall, graceful racemes of nodding, bell-shaped white flowers in late summer when many other plants are fading. Growing up to 1.2 m (4 feet) tall, the flower spikes rise above broad, strap-like foliage, creating a stately, architectural presence in the border. The pendulous white bells have a delicate green tint and a light, sweet fragrance, adding sensory depth to their visual beauty. Native to the highlands of South Africa, Summer Hyacinths thrive in warm, sunny positions with good drainage and reward minimal care with spectacular late-summer displays. Their tall, vertical form makes them excellent for the middle to back of borders, and they combine beautifully with ornamental grasses, late perennials, and other late-summer bulbs like Nerine and Lycoris.

🛡️ Health & Safety

⚠️ Not pet safe ☠️ Toxic

Mildly toxic — bulbs may cause gastrointestinal upset if ingested; generally low risk

Common issues

  • Bulb rot in poorly draining soil, frost damage in cold zones (protect with heavy mulch), tall stems may need staking in exposed positions, slugs on new spring growth, foliage can be damaged by late frosts

💡 Care tips

  1. Plant bulbs 10-15 cm (4-6 in) deep in spring or autumn. Excellent drainage is important but they're more tolerant of heavier soils than many South African bulbs. Stake tall flower stems in windy or exposed sites. In cold zones (zone 6), apply 10-15 cm (4-6 in) of mulch before winter. The late summer bloom time is incredibly valuable — few other bulbs bloom this late. Excellent cut flowers with a long vase life and light fragrance. Allow foliage to die back naturally to feed the bulb. Pair with ornamental grasses for a beautiful late-summer border combination. Very long-lived once established — clumps can be left undisturbed for many years.
