🕷️Indian Spider Lily

Indian Spider Lily

Hymenocallis speciosa

Bulbs & Tubers Difficulty: Easy

📖 About this plant

The Indian Spider Lily (Hymenocallis speciosa) is a striking bulbous plant prized for its exotic, spider-like white flowers with extremely long, narrow petals radiating from a central membranous cup (corona). The flowers bloom on tall, leafless stalks and have a delicate, sweet fragrance, especially noticeable in the evening. Despite the common name “Indian Spider Lily”, the genus Hymenocallis is actually native to the Americas but has become thoroughly naturalized across tropical and subtropical Asia, particularly in India where it is a common sight in gardens, temple courtyards, and along water features. The plant is remarkably resilient — it tolerates wet soils, brief flooding, and partial shade better than most bulbous plants, making it ideal for monsoon-prone Indian gardens. The flowers appear in clusters of 3-6 on each stalk and last 4-5 days individually, with the bloom period extending over several weeks. Unlike many bulbs, spider lily does not require a dry dormancy and will continue to grow year-round in frost-free climates, producing multiple flushes of flowers.

💡 Care tips

  1. Plant bulbs 10-15 cm deep and 30 cm apart in moist, rich soil. Spider lily is one of the few bulbs that tolerates wet soil — perfect for low spots in the garden or near water features. Water regularly during the growing season; reduce but do not stop in winter. Mulch heavily to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Divide clumps every 4-5 years in spring when overcrowded — replant divisions immediately. The plant adapts well to containers (use a 10-12 inch pot). Flowers are most prolific in full sun but the plant will bloom in partial shade. Remove faded flower stalks at the base to keep the plant tidy and redirect energy to the bulb.
