Allamanda Creeper
Allamanda cathartica
📖 About this plant
Allamanda cathartica, commonly called Golden Trumpet or Allamanda Creeper, is a spectacular tropical climber renowned for its huge, trumpet-shaped, golden-yellow flowers that bloom in profusion almost year-round. Native to Brazil, it has become one of the most popular ornamental climbers in Indian gardens, prized for its non-stop colour, fast growth, and ability to cover fences, pergolas, and arches quickly. The flowers are 8-12 cm across, bright golden yellow with a contrasting darker throat, and appear in clusters at the branch tips. Despite the common name “creeper”, Allamanda is technically a scrambling shrub — it does not have tendrils or twining stems, so it needs to be tied to its support. With pruning, it can also be grown as a free-standing shrub or ground cover. The plant is evergreen in tropical climates and produces a milky latex sap when cut (typical of the Apocynaceae family, which also includes oleander and plumeria). Allamanda is a magnet for butterflies and hummingbirds, adding wildlife value to the garden. It is one of the easiest plants to grow in tropical climates — heat-tolerant, sun-loving, and forgiving of neglect once established.

🛡️ Health & Safety
All parts toxic — latex sap can cause skin irritation and is toxic if ingested. Wear gloves when pruning. Keep away from children and pets.
Common issues
- Mealybugs in leaf axils and on new growth, scale insects, spider mites in dry conditions, leaf spot diseases in humid weather, whiteflies, yellowing leaves from nutrient deficiency (especially iron), lack of flowering in too much shade or excessive nitrogen
💡 Care tips
- Plant in full sun for maximum flowering — Allamanda in shade produces lush foliage but few flowers. Provide a strong trellis, fence, or pergola — tie stems to the support as it grows (it does not climb on its own). Prune hard in late winter to control size and force bushy new growth. Feed generously during growing season for continuous bloom. The plant is frost-sensitive — protect from cold winds and bring container plants indoors if temperatures drop below 10°C. Mulch heavily to retain soil moisture. In containers, use a 14-16 inch pot with a trellis. The flowers are short-lived (1-2 days) but produced in such profusion that the plant looks continuously in bloom. Wear gloves when pruning — the sap can irritate skin.
