🌹Desert Rose

Desert Rose

Adenium obesum

Succulents & Cacti Difficulty: Moderate

📖 About this plant

Adenium obesum, commonly called Desert Rose or Mock Azalea, is a stunning succulent shrub or small tree renowned for its swollen, sculptural caudex (base) and profuse, hibiscus-like flowers in shades of pink, red, white, and bicolors. Native to the arid regions of East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, Desert Rose has become a beloved ornamental plant in India, particularly in Rajasthan, Gujarat, and southern states where the warm, dry climate suits it perfectly. The plant is a “fat plant” (caudiciform succulent) — the swollen base stores water and enables the plant to survive extended droughts. In Indian gardens, Desert Rose is grown as a specimen plant in the ground in warm regions or in containers (especially as bonsai) elsewhere. The flowers are large (5-7 cm), trumpet-shaped, with five spreading petals, and bloom in clusters at the branch tips. Modern hybrids come in a stunning range of colours and forms — single, double, and even triple blooms. The plant is highly prized by bonsai enthusiasts because the thick caudex develops character with age, and the small leaves and profuse flowering suit bonsai aesthetics perfectly. A well-grown Desert Rose can live for a century or more, becoming more sculptural with each passing decade.

🛡️ Health & Safety

⚠️ Not pet safe ☠️ Toxic

HIGHLY TOXIC — all parts, especially the milky sap, contain cardiac glycosides (similar to oleander). Sap can cause skin irritation. Keep away from children and pets.

Common issues

  • Root rot from overwatering (the #1 killer — plant MUST dry between waterings),mealybugs in roots and leaf axils, spider mites in dry conditions, scale insects, leaf drop from cold or overwatering, fungal leaf spots, failure to flower from insufficient light or excessive nitrogen

💡 Care tips

  1. Plant in a fast-draining cactus/succulent mix — add at least 50% perlite or pumice to regular potting soil. Use a clay pot with drainage holes (never plastic without drainage). Water ONLY when soil is completely dry — when in doubt, wait another day. In winter (dormancy),water monthly or not at all. Place in the sunniest location available — at least 6 hours of direct sun for flowering. Repot every 2-3 years in spring, raising the caudex slightly above soil level to highlight its sculptural form. Feed with a high-phosphorus fertilizer (bloom booster) during the growing season to encourage flowering. Wear gloves when pruning — the sap is toxic and can irritate skin. Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 10°C. Grown as bonsai,Desert Rose responds well to root pruning and can be shaped into stunning miniature trees.
