Plumeria (Temple Tree)

Plumeria rubra

Outdoor Plants Difficulty: Easy

📖 About this plant

Plumeria (Plumeria rubra), known in India as the Temple Tree (Gulachin), is one of the most iconic flowering trees in tropical Asia — its fragrant flowers are used in leis (Hawaii), temple offerings (India, Bali, Thailand), perfumes, and ornamental garlands. Native to Central America and the Caribbean, Plumeria was brought to India centuries ago and has become thoroughly integrated into Indian religious and cultural life — the flowers are offered to deities in temples, used in wedding decorations, and the tree itself is often planted near temples (hence “Temple Tree”). The plant produces large clusters of showy, five-petalled flowers with a sweet, jasmine-citrus fragrance, especially intense at night. Bloom colours range from pure white with a yellow center (classic “Singapore Plumeria” or Plumeria obtusa) to deep pink, red, yellow, orange, and multi-coloured hybrids. The tree is deciduous in winter — losing all its leaves and looking like a dead stick — before bursting into leaf and flower in spring. This deciduous habit allows the spectacular floral display to be fully visible on the bare branches. Plumeria is also a popular bonsai subject due to its thick sculptural trunk, easy pruning tolerance, and beautiful flowers. The plant stores water in its thick succulent branches, making it highly drought-tolerant — perfect for water-wise gardens in warm climates.

Common issues

  • Root rot from overwatering (the #1 killer — needs excellent drainage)
  • rust fungus (orange pustules on leaves)
  • spider mites in dry conditions
  • mealybugs
  • scale insects
  • leaf drop from cold or overwatering
  • branch tip rot from overhead watering

💡 Care tips

  1. Plant in a sunny location with excellent drainage — Plumeria hates "wet feet" and root rot is the most common cause of death.
  2. Water deeply when soil is completely dry
  3. in winter dormancy, withhold water entirely.
  4. Plant in raised beds or containers if soil is heavy clay.
  5. For containers, use a cactus/succulent mix with added perlite.
  6. Feed with high-phosphorus fertilizer (like rose fertilizer) every 4-6 weeks during the growing season for profuse blooms.
  7. Prune in late winter before new growth starts — cuttings can be propagated (let callus 5-7 days before planting).
  8. The plant is deciduous — do not worry when leaves drop in winter, this is normal.
  9. Avoid getting water on the branches (encourages rot) — water at the base.
  10. Plumeria makes a stunning container specimen for patios — use a large clay pot (16-20 inch) with a well-draining mix.
  11. Bring indoors before frost in cold regions.
