Cordyline (Ti Plant)

Cordyline fruticosa

Tropical Plants Difficulty: Moderate Air purifying

📖 About this plant

Cordyline fruticosa, commonly called the Ti Plant or Hawaiian Ti, is a stunning tropical plant prized for its vibrant, sword-shaped leaves in brilliant shades of red, pink, purple, bronze, and green. Native to Southeast Asia, Papua New Guinea, and Polynesia, the Ti plant has deep cultural significance across the Pacific Islands — in Hawaii, the leaves are used for hula skirts, food wrapping, thatching, and religious ceremonies, and the plant is considered sacred and believed to bring good luck. The plant was carried across the Pacific by Polynesian voyagers and has become naturalized throughout tropical Asia, including parts of India. Cordyline is often confused with Dracaena (which has similar strap-like leaves), but the two are distinguished by their roots — Cordyline has white roots while Dracaena has yellow or orange roots. Modern cultivars come in a stunning range of leaf colours: “Red Sister” has bright magenta and pink leaves, “Hawaiian Baby Ti” has green leaves with pink streaks, “Kiwi” has green leaves edged in pink and yellow, and “Black Mystique” has dark purple-black leaves. Indoors, Cordyline adds bold tropical colour and is one of the few houseplants with naturally red/pink foliage. Outdoors in frost-free climates, it becomes a multi-stemmed shrub or small tree.

💡 Care tips

  1. Place in bright indirect light for the best leaf colour — too little light causes leaves to revert to green, too much direct sun scorches the leaves. Maintain high humidity — group with other plants, use a humidifier,or place on a pebble tray. Water with filtered or rain water if possible — Cordyline is sensitive to fluoride and chlorine in tap water, which causes brown leaf tips. Prune actively to encourage bushy growth — bare stems can be cut back and the top will regrow. The cut stem sections can be propagated as stem cuttings. Repot every 2-3 years in spring. Wipe leaves monthly with a damp cloth to remove dust. Feed with balanced fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season; reduce in winter. The plant is mildly toxic to pets — keep out of reach of cats and dogs.
