Kachnar (Orchid Tree)

Bauhinia variegata

Outdoor Plants Difficulty: Easy

📖 About this plant

Kachnar (Bauhinia variegata), also known as the Orchid Tree, Camel Foot Tree, or Mountain Ebony, is one of the most beautiful flowering trees of the Indian subcontinent — when in bloom from February to April, the tree is covered in masses of pink-to-magenta orchid-like flowers that appear before the new leaves, creating a stunning floral display. The common name “Orchid Tree” comes from the striking resemblance of the flowers to orchids, while “Camel Foot” refers to the distinctive bilobed leaves that look like a camel hoof print. Kachnar has deep cultural significance in India — the flowers are offered in temples, the buds and flowers are eaten as a vegetable (kachnar ki sabzi, a traditional North Indian dish), and the bark is used in Ayurveda to treat skin diseases, digestive disorders, and infections. Modern research has confirmed antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. The tree is widely planted as an ornamental in Indian gardens, parks, and along avenues — its spectacular bloom in late winter to spring provides colour when most other trees are still dormant. The tree is fast-growing, adaptable, and drought-tolerant once established. A pure white-flowered form (Bauhinia variegata var. candida) is also cultivated and is particularly striking. The tree is also a magnet for birds and butterflies when in flower. Beyond ornamental and culinary value, Kachnar wood is used for agricultural implements and the bark yields a dye.

💡 Care tips

  1. Plant in full sun for the best flowering — light shade reduces bloom.
  2. Provide 5-6 m spacing — Kachnar becomes a medium tree.
  3. Water regularly during the first 2-3 years to establish
  4. afterwards it is drought-tolerant.
  5. Apply compost or balanced fertilizer 2-3 times per year.
  6. Prune young trees to develop a strong framework
  7. mature trees need only light pruning to remove dead wood and shape.
  8. The tree is deciduous — leaves drop in winter, followed by spectacular bloom in February-April, then new leaves.
  9. Trees start flowering in 3-4 years from seed.
  10. For culinary use, harvest flower buds before they open — wash, separate petals, and cook as a vegetable with potato or in a curry.
  11. Plant Kachnar as a specimen tree where the spectacular late-winter bloom can be admired, or as an avenue tree with 5-6 m spacing.
  12. The tree is suitable for Indian gardens of all sizes — it is smaller and more manageable than Gulmohar or Amaltas.
  13. Avoid planting near foundations — the tree develops a substantial root system.
