Rain Tree (Monkeypod)

Samanea saman

Outdoor Plants Difficulty: Easy

📖 About this plant

Rain Tree (Samanea saman, formerly Albizia saman), also known as Monkeypod, Saman, or Giant Thibet, is one of the largest and most majestic shade trees of the tropics — its broad, umbrella-shaped canopy can reach 25-30 metres across, providing shade for an area the size of a tennis court. Native to Central and South America, the Rain Tree was introduced to India in the 19th century and has become one of the most popular avenue and shade trees in Indian cities, particularly in Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata. The common name “Rain Tree” comes from the leaf behaviour — the feathery bipinnate leaves fold closed at night and during rain (allowing rain to pass through to the ground beneath), and also from the fact that the tree sometimes appears to “rain” a fine mist on sunny afternoons (this is actually honeydew secreted by aphids feeding on the leaves). The tree produces pink-white puff-like flowers in clusters that resemble powder puffs, blooming twice per year (spring and autumn in India). The flowers are followed by thick, fleshy, brown pods that are sweet and edible (often eaten by children in India). The tree is also called “Monkeypod” because monkeys are said to use the pods as food and the broad canopy as shelter. Beyond ornamental value, the Rain Tree is widely used as a shade tree for cattle in pastures (a single tree provides shade for 20-30 cattle), the wood is used for furniture and carvings, the pods are used as livestock feed, and the tree is nitrogen-fixing (improving soil fertility). The tree is fast-growing, drought-tolerant once established, and provides excellent shade.

Common issues

  • Aphids (causing honeydew and sooty mold)
  • leaf-eating caterpillars
  • scale insects
  • powdery mildew
  • root rot from poor drainage
  • brittle branches breaking in strong winds
  • surface roots damaging pavements

💡 Care tips

  1. Plant in full sun with at least 15-20 m spacing from buildings and infrastructure — Rain Tree develops an enormous canopy and aggressive roots.
  2. The tree needs full sun for best growth.
  3. Water regularly during the first 2-3 years to establish
  4. afterwards it is very drought-tolerant.
  5. Apply compost or balanced fertilizer once or twice per year.
  6. Prune young trees to develop a strong framework
  7. mature trees need regular thinning to reduce wind resistance (brittle branches break easily in monsoon storms).
  8. The tree is fast-growing (1-2 m per year when young) and provides shade within 5-7 years.
  9. Do not plant Rain Tree in small yards, near foundations, or under power lines — the tree becomes very large.
  10. For avenue planting, space trees 12-15 m apart.
  11. The tree is evergreen to semi-deciduous and provides year-round shade.
  12. The leaves fold closed at night and during rain — a fascinating behaviour to observe.
  13. Plant Rain Tree for a magnificent shade tree in large gardens, parks, and along wide avenues — but give it the space it needs.
