Bryophyllum (Air Plant)
Bryophyllum pinnatum
📖 About this plant
Bryophyllum pinnatum (formerly Kalanchoe pinnata), commonly called Air Plant, Cathedral Bells, Miracle Leaf, or Life Plant, is one of the most fascinating and easy-to-grow succulents in the world — famous for its ability to produce tiny plantlets along the margins of its leaves, each one a complete miniature plant that can root and grow into a new adult plant. This remarkable reproductive strategy (called “vivipary”) means the plant effectively “gives birth” to babies while still attached to the mother plant — earning it the names “Life Plant” and “Miracle Leaf”. The plantlets fall off, root wherever they land, and grow into new plants — making Bryophyllum nearly indestructible and invasive in some tropical regions. Native to Madagascar, the plant has naturalized across India and is one of the most common garden plants in Indian homes — often grown in pots, borders, or as a ground cover. Beyond its botanical interest, Bryophyllum is an important medicinal plant in Ayurveda — the leaves are used to treat kidney stones, urinary disorders, wounds, burns, digestive disorders, and respiratory conditions. Modern research has confirmed antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties. The leaves are eaten fresh, juiced, or applied topically as a poultice. The plant is also highly ornamental — the fleshy, scalloped leaves are attractive, and the pendulous bell-shaped flower clusters in winter are unusual and beautiful. Bryophyllum is one of the easiest plants to grow — it tolerates neglect, drought, poor soil, and shade, making it perfect for beginner gardeners.

💡 Care tips
- Plant in well-draining sandy or cactus mix — add sand or perlite to regular potting soil for drainage. Water only when soil is completely dry — overwatering is the #1 killer. Place in bright indirect light to partial sun — direct sun scorches leaves, full shade produces leggy growth. The plant is perfect for containers — use a clay pot with drainage holes. Pinch off flower spikes as they fade to encourage more blooms. The plant produces tiny plantlets along leaf margins — these can be harvested and planted to propagate new plants (or shared with friends). For medicinal use, harvest fresh leaves, wash, and eat 1-2 leaves daily for kidney stones (consult Ayurvedic practitioner for dosage). Apply crushed leaves to wounds, burns, and insect bites for healing. The plant is invasive in some tropical regions — remove flower spikes before seeds form to prevent self-seeding. Bryophyllum is one of the easiest plants to grow and a great choice for beginner gardeners, children gardens, and medicinal gardens.
