Petrea (Purple Wreath)
Petrea volubilis
📖 About this plant
Petrea volubilis, commonly called Purple Wreath, Queen Wreath, or Sandpaper Vine, is a spectacular tropical climber prized for its stunning pendant racemes of lavender-to-purple star-shaped flowers that hang like wisteria from the climbing stems. Native to Mexico and Central America, Petrea has become a beloved ornamental climber in Indian gardens, particularly in cooler regions like Bangalore, Pune, and the Western Ghats. The plant produces long (15-30 cm) pendulous flower spikes in spring to summer, with each spike containing 15-40 flowers. Each flower has two distinctive parts: the inner 5-petalled star-shaped corolla (which drops after a few days) and the outer 5-lobed calyx (which persists for weeks, gradually fading from lavender to almost white). This two-stage display creates the impression of a longer bloom period — the calyces look like stars even after the flowers drop. The common name “Sandpaper Vine” refers to the rough, sandpaper-like texture of the leaves — they feel like fine sandpaper when touched. The plant is a vigorous climber that needs strong support — a pergola, arch, or large trellis. It can also be grown as a sprawling shrub or in a large container with a trellis. Beyond ornamental value, Petrea has some medicinal uses in traditional Mexican medicine. The plant is a magnet for butterflies and bees when in flower.

💡 Care tips
- Plant in full sun to partial shade — best with morning sun and afternoon shade in hot regions.
- Provide a strong trellis, pergola, or arch — Petrea is a vigorous climber that needs substantial support.
- Water regularly during the growing season
- reduce in winter.
- Mulch heavily to retain soil moisture and feed the roots.
- Feed with balanced fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season
- add compost or aged manure annually.
- Prune in late winter to control size and shape — Petrea tolerates hard pruning.
- The plant is perfect for covering pergolas, arches, or large fences.
- The flowers appear on short spurs along the previous season growth — do not prune too severely or you will remove the flowering wood.
- The plant is suitable for cooler tropical and subtropical regions — it does not tolerate extreme heat or humidity.
- In containers, use a 16-18 inch pot with a trellis.
- Place near windows, patios, or outdoor seating areas to enjoy the spectacular spring bloom.
- Petrea is a slow starter — the first 2-3 years it grows slowly, then becomes vigorous.
