Honeydew Melon

Cucumis melo var. inodorus

Fruit Plants & Bushes Difficulty: Easy

📖 About this plant

Honeydew melon (Cucumis melo var. inodorus) is a sweet aromatic melon in the Cucurbitaceae family, closely related to cantaloupe but distinguished by its smooth rind (no netting), pale green to creamy white skin, and sweet juicy pale green flesh. A member of the “winter melon” or “inodorus” group (so named for the lack of strong fragrance when ripe, in contrast to the highly aromatic cantaloupe group), honeydew is believed to have originated in Persia (Iran) or Central Asia and has been cultivated for thousands of years. The fruit is round to slightly oval, 15-20 cm in diameter, with smooth firm skin that matures from green to creamy yellow-white when ripe. The flesh is sweet, juicy, and refreshing, with a subtle honey-like flavor. In India, honeydew (sometimes called Madhuri or simply “green melon”) is grown alongside other melons in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. It is increasingly popular in urban markets where it appears in fruit salads, smoothies, desserts, and as a refreshing snack in the hot summer. Honeydew is rich in vitamin C, potassium, dietary fiber, and water (about 90%) — making it both hydrating and nutritious. Its low calorie density and high water content make it ideal for weight management. The melon is eaten fresh, chilled, in fruit salads, smoothies, and sorbets. The plant is a warm-season trailing vine that thrives in sunny sandy soils.

Common issues

  • Powdery mildew
  • downy mildew
  • fusarium wilt
  • anthracnose
  • cucumber beetles
  • aphids
  • melon fruit fly
  • squash bugs
  • blossom end rot from calcium deficiency
  • poor fruit set from lack of pollination

💡 Care tips

  1. Direct sow seeds after soil warms to 25°C, 2 cm deep, 3-4 seeds per hill.
  2. Space hills 1-1.5 m apart in rows 1.5-2 m apart.
  3. Thin to 2 strongest seedlings per hill.
  4. Plant in full sun in sandy well-draining soil enriched with compost.
  5. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizer which produces vines at the expense of fruit — use phosphorus/potassium-rich feed.
  6. Water consistently during vine growth and fruit development
  7. reduce watering 1-2 weeks before harvest to concentrate sugars.
  8. Mulch to retain moisture and keep fruits off soil (or place on a board/straw).
  9. Hand-pollinate female flowers (with mini fruit behind) using a male flower if bee activity is low.
  10. Unlike cantaloupes, honeydews do NOT slip from the vine when ripe — judge ripeness by skin color (changes from greenish to creamy yellow-white), a slight give at the blossom end, and a subtle sweet fragrance.
  11. The skin should feel slightly waxy.
  12. Honeydews continue to ripen slightly off the vine but develop best flavor if harvested fully ripe.
  13. In India, sow February-March for summer harvest.
