Watermelon

Citrullus lanatus

Fruit Plants & Bushes Difficulty: Easy

📖 About this plant

Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) is the quintessential summer fruit, beloved across India for its thirst-quenching juicy flesh and refreshing sweetness during the scorching hot months. Native to the Kalahari Desert region of Africa, where wild watermelons still grow and have been a vital water source for indigenous peoples and desert travelers for millennia, watermelon has been cultivated for over 5,000 years — ancient Egyptian tombs contain watermelon seeds, and the fruit spread across the world via trade routes. In India, watermelon (called tarbooj in Hindi, kalinda in Marathi, and darbhusa in Telugu) is one of the most important summer fruit crops, grown extensively in Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh. The plant is a sprawling annual vine in the Cucurbitaceae family, producing large deeply-lobed leaves, yellow flowers, and enormous round or oblong fruits weighing 1-15 kg (the largest varieties can exceed 40 kg). The thick rind ranges from light to dark green, often with distinctive stripes or mottling; the flesh inside is typically red or pink (due to lycopene), but yellow and orange-fleshed varieties also exist. Watermelon is over 90% water, making it exceptionally hydrating, and is rich in vitamin C, vitamin A (beta-carotene), potassium, citrulline (an amino acid), and lycopene (an antioxidant associated with heart health). The fruit is eaten fresh, chilled, in fruit salads, juices, smoothies, popsicles, and grilled (yes, grilled watermelon is a thing). In India, watermelon juice mixed with mint, lemon, and black salt is a popular summer cooler. The seeds are edible and rich in protein and healthy fats — they are roasted and eaten as a snack in many cultures.

💡 Care tips

  1. Direct sow seeds after soil warms to 25°C, 2-3 cm deep, 3-4 seeds per hill.
  2. Space hills 1-1.5 m apart in rows 2-2.5 m apart.
  3. Thin to 2 strongest seedlings per hill.
  4. Plant in full sun in sandy well-draining soil enriched with compost.
  5. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizer which produces vines at the expense of fruit — use phosphorus/potassium-rich feed.
  6. Water consistently during vine growth and fruit development
  7. reduce watering 1 week before harvest to concentrate sugars.
  8. Mulch to retain moisture and keep fruits off soil (place boards or straw under developing fruits to prevent rotting).
  9. Hand-pollinate female flowers (with mini fruit behind) using a male flower if bee activity is low.
  10. Harvest watermelons when the tendril closest to the fruit stem turns brown and dries, the underside (ground spot) turns from white to creamy yellow, the skin becomes dull and slightly rough, and the fruit sounds hollow when tapped (a "thud" rather than a "ping").
  11. Watermelons do not ripen after harvest — pick when ready.
  12. In India, sow February-March for summer harvest.
  13. Successive sowings extend the season.
  14. Popular Indian cultivars include Sugar Baby (small, icebox type), Arka Manik, Asahi Yamato, and improved hybrid varieties.
