Cochlospermum religiosum
📖 About this plant
Cochlospermum religiosum (syn. Cochlospermum gossypium — buttercup tree or ‘Ganiari’/’Gelgela’ in Odia) is a medium deciduous tree of the Bixaceae family. The tree bears large bright yellow flowers in spring before leaf emergence — making it a spectacular ornamental. The tree is sacred in Hinduism — flowers are offered to Lord Shiva (hence ‘religiosum’). Wood is soft and used for fuelwood and crafts. The tree is naturally found in dry deciduous forests.
