Gudumari
Gymnema sylvestre
📖 About this plant
Gymnema sylvestre (gurmar or ‘Gudumari’ in Odia, also called Madhunashini) is a woody climber of the Asclepiadaceae family. The plant’s leaves contain gymnemic acid that temporarily suppresses the ability to taste sweetness — hence the name ‘gurmar’ (sugar destroyer). Leaves are used in Ayurvedic medicine for diabetes — modern research has confirmed hypoglycemic activity.
