Asian Citrus Psyllid
Diaphorina citri
📖 Description
The Asian citrus psyllid is the most devastating insect threat to citrus worldwide due to its role as the vector of Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus, the bacterium that causes citrus greening disease (Huanglongbing or HLB). This disease has no cure and kills infected trees within 5-8 years. It has decimated citrus industries in Florida, Brazil, and China, causing billions of dollars in losses. The psyllid itself is relatively small and unassuming, but the disease it spreads makes it arguably the most destructive insect in global agriculture.
⚠️ Symptoms to watch for
- Citrus greening disease (Huanglongbing/HLB),Asymmetric blotchy mottle on leaves,Small, misshapen, bitter fruit,Excessive fruit drop,Yellow shoots and branch dieback,Tree death within 5-8 years of infection
🩹 Treatment
- Apply horticultural oil to smother nymphs (organic),Release Tamarixia parasitic wasps (organic),Use kaolin clay as feeding deterrent (organic),Apply systemic imidacloprid as soil drench (chemical),Spray with chlorpyrifos or dimethoate (chemical)
