Banana Aphid
Pentalonia nigronervosa
📖 Description
Banana Aphid is the sole vector of Banana Bunchy Top Virus (BBTV), the most destructive viral disease of banana in the Indian subcontinent and Pacific. Once BBTV enters a mat it is incurable — the entire mat must be uprooted and destroyed to prevent aphid-mediated spread. The aphid is small, cryptic and hides under leaf sheaths, making detection difficult. In Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Northeast India, BBTV has caused total crop losses in susceptible plantings. Management hinges on planting virus-free material, early rogueing, ant control (ants move aphids between mats) and protecting young suckers with systemic insecticides.
⚠️ Symptoms to watch for
- Yellowing and curling of leaves, sooty mold on honeydew, stunted plant growth, deformation of cigar leaf, transmission of Banana Bunchy Top Virus (BBTV) — the most devastating viral disease of banana, dark necrotic leaf tip, cessation of new leaf emergence in BBTV-infected plants
🩹 Treatment
- Remove and destroy BBTV-infected plants (rogueing), spray soapy water to expose colonies, apply neem oil 5 ml/L under leaf sheaths, use need-based systemic insecticide on infected mats and neighbors
🌿 Organic treatments
- Neem oil 5 ml/L + 5 g/L soap spray targeting leaf sheaths, release of banana aphid parasitoid Aphidius transcaspicus, application of Beauveria bassiana @ 5 g/L, intercrop with repellent plants (marigold, tulsi)
🧪 Chemical treatments
- Imidacloprid 17.8 SL @ 0.3 ml/L (soil drench 1-2 ml/plant), Dimethoate 30 EC @ 1.5 ml/L, Acephate 75 SP @ 1 g/L, Thiamethoxam 25 WG @ 0.25 g/L — apply as pseudostem injection or soil drench
🛡️ Prevention
- Use virus-free tissue-culture plantlets, rogue BBTV-infected mats including entire mat and rhizome, control ant colonies that tend aphids, maintain clean field sanitation, avoid inter-plot movement of suckers from infected areas, plant resistant/tolerant varieties (Calcutta 4 sources)
🪴 Affected plants
- Banana, Plantain, Abaca, Heliconia, Cardamom, Zingiber
🦋 Natural predators
- Ladybird Beetles, Syrphid Fly Larvae, Lacewing Larvae, Predatory Midges (Aphidoletes), Spiders, Predatory Bugs
🌱 Host plants
- Musa spp., Ensete ventricosum, Heliconia, Alpinia, Etlingera
🔄 Lifecycle
- Parthenogenetic viviparous — females give birth to 8-30 nymphs.
- Nymphs pass through 4 instars in 7-10 days.
- Adult lifespan 15-25 days.
- 25-30 generations per year in tropical conditions.
- Winged forms produced under crowding or plant stress, enabling new mat infestation.
📅 Season
- Year-round in banana-growing belts, peaks during warm humid months (Mar-Jun and Sep-Nov)
🔎 Appearance
- Small brown to dark reddish-brown aphids with prominent dark cornicles and banded antennae.
- Winged forms have characteristic dark wing veins.
- Colonies hide under leaf sheaths, in unfurled cigar leaf and around suckers.
💥 Damage level
- Severe
🔁 Reproduction rate
- Rapid
