Banana Pseudostem Borer
Odoiporus longicollis
📖 Description
Banana Pseudostem Borer is a major pest of banana across the Indian subcontinent, particularly in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and West Bengal. Adult female weevils lay eggs in cavities chewed into the pseudostem. Newly hatched larvae tunnel extensively through the pseudostem, weakening the plant, reducing water and nutrient transport, and causing yellowing, wilting, and breakage. Unlike the Rhizome Weevil that attacks the rhizome, the Pseudostem Borer attacks the aerial pseudostem and is more visible through frass extrusion and sap oozing. The pest is most damaging in stressed plantations with poor sanitation and in ratoon crops. Injecting biological or chemical insecticides directly into borer holes, combined with pest-free planting material and crop rotation, is essential for management.
⚠️ Symptoms to watch for
- Holes in the pseudostem with extruded frass and sap, yellowing and wilting of leaves, stunted plants, broken or snapped pseudostems, reduced bunch size, darkened and rotten pseudostem interior, plant death in severe cases, yield loss 30-70%
🩹 Treatment
- Use healthy pest-free suckers, apply Beauveria bassiana @ 5g/L into borer holes, set up pseudostem traps, drench pseudostem base with insecticide, destroy infested plants, practice crop rotation
🌿 Organic treatments
- Use healthy pest-free suckers or tissue culture plants, apply Beauveria bassiana @ 5 g/L into borer holes (inject with syringe), apply Metarhizium anisopliae in soil, set up pseudostem traps @ 25/ha, apply neem cake @ 250 g/plant, inject neem oil 5 ml/L into borer holes, parboil suckers in hot water (55°C for 20 min), destroy and burn infested plants
🧪 Chemical treatments
- Inject Monocrotophos 36 SL @ 5 ml + 5 ml water per plant into borer holes, drench pseudostem base with Chlorpyrifos 20 EC @ 5 ml/L, apply Carbofuran 3G @ 25 g per plant in soil, spray Quinalphos 25 EC @ 1 ml/L on pseudostem
🛡️ Prevention
- Use certified pest-free suckers or tissue culture plants, inspect suckers thoroughly before planting, parboil suckers in hot water (55°C for 20 min), practice crop rotation with non-host crops, destroy and burn infested plants, remove and burn crop residues after harvest, maintain field sanitation, use pseudostem traps for monitoring, avoid wounding pseudostems during cultivation

🔄 Lifecycle
- Female lays 30-100 eggs singly in cavities chewed into the pseudostem.
- Eggs hatch in 5-8 days.
- Larvae tunnel through the pseudostem for 21-35 days, passing through 5-7 instars.
- Pupation occurs in a pupal cell inside the pseudostem, lasting 8-12 days.
- Adults live 4-6 months and are nocturnal.
- Total life cycle 35-55 days; 4-6 generations per year.
📅 Season
- Year-round in tropical climates, peaks during warm humid periods (Apr-Nov)
🔎 Appearance
- Large, reddish-brown to black weevils with a long curved snout and characteristic orange-red markings.
- Adults are slow-moving and play dead.
- Larvae are creamy-white, legless grubs with a brown head, growing up to 20 mm, found tunneling in the pseudostem.
