Cabbage Looper

Trichoplusia ni

Chewing Insects Moderate Risk 30-40 mm (larva)

📖 Description

Cabbage Looper (Trichoplusia ni) is an important defoliator of cabbage and other brassica vegetables across the Indian subcontinent, particularly severe in cabbage and cauliflower belts of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The ‘looper’ gait (only two pairs of prolegs) is characteristic of the family Noctuidae (subfamily Plusiinae) — the larva moves by bringing its posterior prolegs forward to meet its thoracic legs, creating a ‘looping’ motion. Both larvae and adults are nocturnal — larvae hide in cabbage heads during the day and feed at night, while adults fly at dusk and are attracted to light. Beyond direct defoliation, fecal contamination renders cabbage heads unmarketable. Bt-based biopesticides provide excellent control when applied against early instars in the cool evening hours. The pest is highly polyphagous, attacking over 160 plant species across 36 families, and is also a major pest of cotton, soybean and tomato in some regions. Outbreaks are favoured by warm dry weather and excessive nitrogen. IPM with Bt applications, light trapping of adults, conservation of natural enemies (especially Trichogramma egg parasitoids and coccinellid predators) and need-based insecticide use provides effective and sustainable control.

⚠️ Symptoms to watch for

  • Window-pane feeding by young larvae on leaf undersides, irregular holes on leaves, complete skeletonization leaving only midribs in severe infestation, fecal pellets contaminating cabbage heads, damage to developing cabbage heads, yield loss 20-40%

🩹 Treatment

  • Handpick larvae from young plants, install light traps @ 1/ha, spray Bacillus thuringiensis @ 1 g/L on young larvae, apply NSKE 5% in early evening, use need-based insecticide when 2 larvae per plant before head formation

🌿 Organic treatments

  • Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki @ 1-2 g/L (very effective), NSKE 5%, neem oil 5 ml/L, Beauveria bassiana @ 5 g/L, release Trichogramma pretiosum @ 50000/ha (egg parasitoid), spray NPV (TnSNPV) @ 250 LE/ha if available

🧪 Chemical treatments

  • Emamectin benzoate 5 SG @ 0.3 g/L, Chlorantraniliprole 18.5 SC @ 0.3 ml/L, Novaluron 10 EC @ 1 ml/L, Indoxacarb 14.5 SC @ 0.5 ml/L, Flubendiamide 39.35 SC @ 0.2 ml/L, Spinosad 45 SC @ 0.2 ml/L

🛡️ Prevention

  • Use nylon net (40 mesh) nursery covers, install bird perches to encourage avian predation, intercrop with tomato or carrot to disrupt oviposition, plant mustard as trap crop around cabbage (50-1 ratio), destroy crop residues after harvest, sow early to escape peak larval period, plant resistant varieties

🪴 Affected plants

  • Cabbage, Cauliflower, Broccoli, Knol-khol, Tomato, Cotton, Soybean, Potato, Pea, Other Vegetables

🦋 Natural predators

  • Trichogramma pretiosum (egg parasitoid), Cotesia spp., Paper wasps (Polistes), Spiders, Birds, Predatory Bugs

🌱 Host plants

  • Brassica oleracea var. capitata, Brassica oleracea var. botrytis, Solanum lycopersicum, Gossypium hirsutum, Glycine max

🔄 Lifecycle

  • Female lays 300-600 eggs singly on leaf undersides.
  • Eggs hatch in 3-5 days.
  • Larvae feed for 14-20 days through 5 instars.
  • Pupation in silken cocoon on leaf or in soil, lasting 7-12 days.
  • Adult lifespan 10-15 days.
  • Total life cycle 25-40 days; 5-7 generations per year.

📅 Season

  • September-April (cool season), peaks Nov-Feb

🔎 Appearance

  • Larva is a smooth, pale green caterpillar with two pairs of prolegs (typical 'looper' or 'inchworm' gait — only two pairs of prolegs plus anal prolegs).
  • Has thin white longitudinal stripes along the body.
  • Adult moth is mottled brownish-grey with a characteristic silver mark (yin-yang or figure-8 shape) on each forewing.

💥 Damage level

  • Moderate

🔁 Reproduction rate

  • Rapid

🗺️ Geographic regions

  • Indian Subcontinent
  • Cosmopolitan in Tropics and Subtropics Worldwide
