Cockroaches
Blattodea
📖 Description
Cockroaches are primarily indoor and structural pests, but they can occasionally damage garden plants, particularly seedlings and tender transplants in greenhouses and container gardens. Most cockroach species are scavengers that feed on decaying organic matter, but in the absence of other food sources, they will chew on young plants. They are nocturnal feeders, hiding in dark, moist locations during the day. In warm climates, outdoor cockroach species like the smokybrown cockroach are more likely to be found in gardens. Their presence in growing areas can also contaminate surfaces and create unsanitary conditions.
⚠️ Symptoms to watch for
- Irregular chewing damage on seedling leaves and stems,Feeding damage on tender young transplants at night,Plants severed at soil level similar to cutworm damage,Frass (droppings) near plant bases or under containers,Seedlings missing or severely damaged overnight
🩹 Treatment
- Set out bait stations near affected plants (organic/chemical),Apply diatomaceous earth around plant bases (organic),Use sticky traps near hiding places to monitor and capture (organic),Remove hiding places and debris near plant beds (organic),Apply boric acid dust in cracks and crevices (chemical),Use hydramethylnon or fipronil bait gels (chemical)
🌿 Organic treatments
- Set out bait stations near affected plants (organic/chemical),Apply diatomaceous earth around plant bases,Use sticky traps near hiding places to monitor and capture,Remove hiding places and debris near plant beds
🧪 Chemical treatments
- Apply boric acid dust in cracks and crevices,Use hydramethylnon or fipronil bait gels
🛡️ Prevention
- Remove plant debris, mulch piles, and stacked wood near gardens,Seal cracks and gaps in greenhouse structures and containers,Keep growing areas clean and free of spilled food and organic waste,Reduce moisture by fixing leaks and improving drainage,Elevate pots off the ground to reduce hiding spots,Use tight-fitting lids on compost bins

- Adults live 3-12 months.
- Most species have 1-2 generations per year.
- Development is faster in warm, humid conditions.
