Coconut Skipper (Palm Skipper)

Gangara thyrsis

Chewing Insects Moderate Risk 40-50 mm (larva)

📖 Description

Coconut Skipper (Gangara thyrsis) is a minor but persistent pest of coconut and other palms across coastal India — Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal and the island territories. The larva folds leaflets with silk and white waxy deposits, feeding within the fold and protecting itself from natural enemies and insecticide contact. Heavy infestation can cause characteristic drying patches on coconut fronds, but yield loss is generally modest compared to other coconut pests (rhinoceros beetle, black-headed caterpillar, red palm weevil). The pest prefers young palms and shaded, humid gardens. IPM with pruning of infested fronds, hand-collection of folded leaflets and need-based biopesticide application provides effective control. The pest is more of a concern in young plantations (1-5 years) where defoliation can slow growth — in mature palms, natural biological control usually keeps populations below economic threshold. Conservation of native parasitoids and avoidance of broad-spectrum insecticides are key preventive measures.

⚠️ Symptoms to watch for

  • Folded leaflets with silk and white waxy deposits, scalloped feeding on leaflet margins within the fold, drying of folded leaflets, reduced nut production in severe infestation, yield loss 10-20%

🩹 Treatment

  • Handpick and destroy folded leaflets containing larvae, prune infested leaves, apply neem oil 5 ml/L using power sprayer for tall palms, use need-based insecticide when 5 folded leaflets per palm

🌿 Organic treatments

  • Neem oil 5 ml/L + 5 g/L soap spray, Bacillus thuringiensis @ 2 g/L, Beauveria bassiana @ 5 g/L, hand-collect and destroy folded leaflets, prune infested fronds, apply Metarhizium anisopliae @ 5 g/L using root-feeding technique

🧪 Chemical treatments

  • Acephate 75 SP @ 1.5 g/L, Chlorantraniliprole 18.5 SC @ 0.3 ml/L, Emamectin benzoate 5 SG @ 0.3 g/L, Quinalphos 25 EC @ 1.5 ml/L — apply using power sprayer or root-feeding for tall palms

🛡️ Prevention

  • Maintain garden sanitation by removing dried folded leaves, prune infested fronds, avoid monocropping, encourage intercrops (cocoa, banana, pepper), monitor with light traps, conserve native parasitoids by avoiding broad-spectrum insecticides

🪴 Affected plants

  • Coconut, Areca Nut, Palmyra, Date Palm, Ornamental Palms (Royal, Fan)

🦋 Natural predators

  • Parasitic Wasps (Apanteles, Tetrastichus), Spiders, Predatory Bugs, Birds

🌱 Host plants

  • Cocos nucifera, Areca catechu, Borassus flabellifer, Phoenix dactylifera, Roystonea regia

🔄 Lifecycle

  • Female lays 50-100 eggs singly on leaflet undersides.
  • Eggs hatch in 5-7 days.
  • Larvae feed for 25-35 days through 5-6 instars, inside folded leaflets.
  • Pupation inside the fold, lasting 12-18 days.
  • Adult lifespan 15-25 days.
  • Total life cycle 50-75 days; 4-5 generations per year.

📅 Season

  • Year-round in coastal belts, peaks Mar-Jun and Sep-Nov

🔎 Appearance

  • Larva is a large greenish-yellow caterpillar with a smooth body, distinct black head capsule and a white waxy bloom covering the body.
  • Lives inside folded leaflets held together with silk and white waxy deposits.
  • Adult is a brownish-orange skipper butterfly with dark spots on forewings and fringed hindwings.
