Indian Dragonfly (Wandering Glider)
Pantala flavescens
📖 Description
Indian Dragonfly (Pantala flavescens), also called Wandering Glider or Globe Skimmer, is one of the most widespread and important generalist predators in Indian agriculture, found in all agro-ecological zones. The species is remarkable for its long-distance migrations — it undertakes multi-generational migrations across the Indian Ocean between India and Africa, making it one of the longest-distance migrating insects in the world. Both adults and nymphs are voracious predators — adults catch flying insects (mosquitoes, flies, moths, butterflies, leafhoppers, planthoppers) on the wing, while nymphs are aquatic and prey on mosquito larvae and other aquatic insects. A single adult can consume 50-100 prey items per day, with nymphs consuming 20-50 mosquito larvae per day. The species is particularly valuable for IPM of rice pests (leafhoppers, planthoppers, moths) — healthy dragonfly populations in rice ecosystems can suppress pest populations below economic threshold without insecticide use. The species is also culturally significant in India — dragonflies are considered auspicious and are not harmed by farmers. Conservation of native dragonfly populations through maintenance of water sources (ponds, ditches, rice fields), avoidance of insecticide drift to water bodies, and preservation of emergent vegetation around water bodies is essential for sustainable rice IPM. The species is an indicator of healthy aquatic ecosystems — its presence indicates that water bodies are not contaminated with insecticides and that aquatic biodiversity is intact.
⚠️ Symptoms to watch for
- No damage to crops (beneficial). Effective predation reduces flying insect pest populations 30-50%. Provides excellent control of rice leafhoppers, planthoppers, moths and butterflies when dragonfly populations are healthy. Nymphs provide excellent control of mosquito larvae in rice fields.
🩹 Treatment
- No treatment needed — this is a beneficial predator. For field augmentation: maintain water sources (ponds, ditches, rice fields) for nymph development, avoid insecticide drift to water bodies, conserve native populations by avoiding broad-spectrum insecticides.
🌿 Organic treatments
- Dragonfly is itself organic — maintain water sources (ponds, ditches, rice fields) for nymph development, avoid insecticide drift to water bodies, plant emergent vegetation (reeds, cattails) around water bodies to provide perching and oviposition sites, conserve native populations by avoiding broad-spectrum insecticides
🧪 Chemical treatments
- Generally avoided — most chemical insecticides are toxic to dragonfly nymphs (especially aquatic insecticides and pyrethroids). If pest pressure requires insecticide application, use selective insecticides (Bt, NPV) that have lower impact on dragonflies. NEVER apply insecticides to water bodies or rice fields during dragonfly breeding season.
🛡️ Prevention
- Conserve native dragonfly populations by avoiding broad-spectrum insecticides, maintain water sources (ponds, ditches, rice fields) for nymph development, plant emergent vegetation (reeds, cattails) around water bodies to provide perching and oviposition sites, avoid insecticide drift to water bodies, maintain field margins with tall vegetation for adult perching
🪴 Affected plants
- Targets prey on: rice, vegetables, cotton — adults attack mosquitoes, flies, moths, butterflies, leafhoppers, planthoppers; nymphs attack mosquito larvae, aquatic insects
🦋 Natural predators
- Birds (bee-eaters, kingfishers), spiders, frogs, fish (predatory on nymphs); otherwise dragonfly has few natural enemies
🌱 Host plants
- Any crop with flying insect prey — predator has extremely wide prey range covering 100+ pest species
🔄 Lifecycle
- Female lays 500-1000 eggs in water (rice fields, ponds, ditches).
- Eggs hatch in 5-15 days.
- Nymphs (naiads) are aquatic, feeding for 30-90 days through 11-13 instars.
- Emergence (transformation from nymph to adult) on emergent vegetation, lasting 1-2 hours.
- Adult lifespan 30-90 days.
- Total life cycle 40-120 days.
- Multivoltine (multiple generations per year) in tropical conditions.
📅 Season
- Year-round in tropical conditions, peaks during monsoon and post-monsoon (Jun-Nov) when water bodies are full
🔎 Appearance
- Adult is a medium-sized, yellowish-orange to reddish-brown dragonfly with characteristic broad hindwings; body is slender with metallic sheen on thorax.
- Nymph is aquatic, brownish-green, with characteristic extendable lower lip (labium) used to capture prey.
- Eyes are large and compound, providing nearly 360-degree vision.
💥 Damage level
- Beneficial
🔁 Reproduction rate
- Moderate
🗺️ Geographic regions
- Indian Subcontinent
- Cosmopolitan in Tropics and Subtropics Worldwide (Long-distance Migrant)
