Mango Leaf Webber

Orthaga euadrusalis

Chewing Insects Moderate Risk 20-25 mm (larva)

📖 Description

Mango Leaf Webber (Orthaga euadrusalis) is an important pest of mango across the Indian subcontinent, particularly damaging in mango belts of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu where mango is grown on over 2 million hectares. The larva is distinctive — it webs together several leaves at shoot tips with silk, creating a characteristic nest within which it feeds gregariously on the enclosed leaves. The webbing provides protection from natural enemies and insecticide contact, making control difficult unless webs are mechanically removed before spraying. Outbreaks are favoured by warm humid weather, dense canopy and excessive nitrogen. The pest is most damaging in young orchards (1-10 years) and neglected orchards with poor sanitation — mature, well-maintained orchards typically tolerate moderate infestations without significant yield loss. IPM with mechanical pruning and burning of webbed shoots (the single most effective control measure), Bt applications against exposed larvae, light trapping of adults, and conservation of native parasitoids provides effective control. The pest is most active during the post-monsoon period (September-November) and spring (March-May) when mango flushes new growth.

⚠️ Symptoms to watch for

  • Webbed clusters of leaves at shoot tips (characteristic sign)
  • skeletonization of leaves within web
  • drying of webbed leaves
  • defoliation of affected shoots
  • reduced flowering and fruit set in severe infestation
  • yield loss 15-30% in subsequent season

🩹 Treatment

  • Prune and burn webbed shoots
  • install light traps @ 1/ha for adult monitoring
  • spray Bacillus thuringiensis @ 1 g/L on webbed clusters after removing webs
  • apply NSKE 5%
  • use need-based insecticide when 5 webs per tree

🌿 Organic treatments

  • Prune and burn webbed shoots before larvae mature
  • Bacillus thuringiensis @ 1-2 g/L on exposed larvae
  • NSKE 5%
  • neem oil 5 ml/L
  • Beauveria bassiana @ 5 g/L
  • hand-collect and destroy webs
  • install light traps
  • conserve native parasitoids

🧪 Chemical treatments

  • Emamectin benzoate 5 SG @ 0.3 g/L
  • Chlorantraniliprole 18.5 SC @ 0.3 ml/L
  • Novaluron 10 EC @ 1 ml/L
  • Quinalphos 25 EC @ 1.5 ml/L
  • Indoxacarb 14.5 SC @ 0.5 ml/L — apply after removing webs to expose larvae

🛡️ Prevention

  • Prune and burn webbed shoots before larvae mature
  • maintain orchard sanitation
  • install light traps to monitor adult emergence
  • balanced nutrition to maintain tree vigour
  • avoid excess nitrogen
  • plant resistant varieties
  • conserve native parasitoids by avoiding broad-spectrum insecticides

🔄 Lifecycle

  • Female lays 100-200 eggs in small clusters on tender leaves.
  • Eggs hatch in 5-7 days.
  • Larvae web leaves together and feed for 20-30 days through 5-6 instars.
  • Pupation inside the web or in soil, lasting 10-15 days.
  • Adult lifespan 7-15 days.
  • Total life cycle 40-60 days; 4-6 generations per year.

📅 Season

  • Year-round, peaks Mar-May (spring flush) and Sep-Nov (post-monsoon)

🔎 Appearance

  • Larva is a pale yellowish-green caterpillar with a brown head and dark brown longitudinal stripes on the body.
  • Lives inside characteristic webbed nests made by silking together several leaves at shoot tips.
  • Adult moth is small (20-25 mm wingspan), pale brownish with darker brown and silvery markings on forewings.
