Mungbean Leaf Beetle
Madurasia obscurella
📖 Description
Mungbean Leaf Beetle is an important pest of pulse crops across the Indian subcontinent, particularly severe in mungbean and blackgram belts of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Both adult and larval stages damage the crop — adults feed on leaves creating characteristic round holes, while larvae feed on root nodules in the soil, reducing the plant’s ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen. This dual damage (foliar + root) makes M. obscurella particularly damaging — even moderate infestations can significantly reduce yield through combined leaf area loss and impaired nitrogen nutrition. Outbreaks are favoured by warm dry weather and continuous pulse cropping. IPM with neem-based sprays against adults, soil application of Metarhizium against larvae, crop rotation and deep summer ploughing provides effective control. Conservation of predatory ground beetles (Carabidae) is important — these beetles prey on soil-dwelling larvae and can suppress populations naturally.
⚠️ Symptoms to watch for
- Round irregular feeding holes on leaves
- skeletonization of leaves in severe infestation
- damaged root nodules by larvae reducing nitrogen fixation
- reduced plant vigour
- yield loss 15-30%
🩹 Treatment
- Apply neem oil 5 ml/L with sticker
- dust malathion 5% @ 25 kg/ha
- install yellow sticky traps @ 10/ha
- use need-based insecticide when 5 beetles per plant
🌿 Organic treatments
- Neem oil 5 ml/L + 5 g/L soap
- NSKE 5%
- Beauveria bassiana @ 5 g/L
- apply Metarhizium anisopliae @ 5 g/L to soil for larval control
- install yellow sticky traps
- conserve predatory ground beetles
🧪 Chemical treatments
- Indoxacarb 14.5 SC @ 0.5 ml/L
- Acephate 75 SP @ 1 g/L
- Imidacloprid 17.8 SL @ 0.3 ml/L
- Chlorpyriphos 20 EC @ 2 ml/L (also controls soil-dwelling larvae)
- Quinalphos 25 EC @ 1.5 ml/L
🛡️ Prevention
- Plant early to escape peak beetle emergence
- rotate crops to break cycle
- deep summer ploughing to expose larvae and pupae
- intercrop with non-host (maize, sorghum)
- destroy weed hosts around fields
- plant resistant varieties (Pusa Vishal, Pant Urd-31)

🔄 Lifecycle
- Female lays 80-150 eggs in soil at plant base.
- Eggs hatch in 5-8 days.
- Larvae feed on root nodules for 20-30 days through 4 instars.
- Pupation in soil, lasting 7-12 days.

🔎 Appearance
- Adult is a small oval beetle, reddish-brown to dark brown with fine pubescence covering the body; antennae are half body length.
- Larvae are slender, white with brown head, living in soil where they feed on root nodules.
