Babul
Acacia nilotica
📖 About this plant
Acacia nilotica (syn. Vachellia nilotica — Babul or ‘Babul’ in Odia/Hindi) is a thorny deciduous tree of the Mimosaceae family, naturally found in dry tropical India. The tree is one of India’s most useful multipurpose trees — wood is hard and durable (used for agricultural implements, carts, wheel hubs, and fuelwood); bark yields tannin for leather tanning; gum (gum arabic) is used in pharmaceuticals and food; leaves and pods are valuable livestock fodder; and the tree fixes nitrogen improving soil fertility. Babul is extensively planted for agroforestry, windbreaks, and erosion control. Flowers produce high-quality nectar for honey.
