Bana Ruar
Aegialitis rotundifolia
📖 About this plant
Aegialitis rotundifolia (mangrove club tree or ‘Bana Ruar’/’Banarua’ in Odia) is a small mangrove shrub/tree of the Plumbaginaceae family — unusual as most Plumbaginaceae are herbaceous. The plant has characteristic rounded succulent leaves that excrete salt through special glands (salt-excretor mangrove adaptation). It is found in the Sundarbans and other Indian mangrove forests. The plant produces pneumatophores for gas exchange in waterlogged mangrove mud.
