Betel Nut Palm

Areca catechu

Outdoor Plants Difficulty: Moderate

📖 About this plant

Betel nut palm (Areca catechu), also known as the areca nut palm or supari tree, is a slender medium-sized tropical palm in the Arecaceae family, cultivated primarily for its seeds — the famous “betel nuts” or “areca nuts” that are chewed across South and Southeast Asia, particularly in paan (a traditional preparation of betel leaf wrapped around areca nut, slaked lime, and various flavorings). Native to the Philippines and Southeast Asia, the betel nut palm has been cultivated for thousands of years and is deeply embedded in the cultural, religious, and social practices of India — betel nut is offered as prasad in temples, used in Hindu wedding rituals, and chewed as a stimulant after meals. India is the worlds largest producer of areca nuts, with major cultivation in Karnataka (Mangalore, Shimoga, Chikmagalur), Kerala, Assam, West Bengal, and Maharashtra. The palm is a striking ornamental — a tall slender grey ringed trunk (10-20 m tall, only 15-30 cm diameter), topped with a crown of 6-8 arching feathery pinnate fronds up to 2 m long, with cream-colored inflorescences below the crown that develop into clusters of oval orange-red fruits about 5 cm long. Inside each fruit is a single hard seed — the areca nut. The seed is sliced or grated, wrapped in betel leaf (Piper betle) with slaked lime and sometimes tobacco, and chewed as paan. The arecoline in the nut is a mild stimulant that produces a sense of well-being, alertness, and mild euphoria — similar to nicotine. However, long-term paan chewing (especially with tobacco) is associated with oral cancer, and the WHO classifies areca nut as a Group 1 carcinogen. Despite this, cultural use continues. The palm is also a beautiful landscape tree, and the timber (from old fallen trunks) is used in construction.

🛡️ Health & Safety

Common issues

  • Bud rot (most serious — Phytophthora palmivora), stem bleeding, yellow leaf disease (phytoplasma), areca nut spindle bug, mites, rhinoceros beetle, fruit rot, mahali disease, nutrient deficiencies (magnesium, potassium, boron)

💡 Care tips

  1. Plant fresh seeds (germinate in 6-12 weeks) or young nursery plants. Plant in full sun to partial shade in well-draining sandy loam soil. Space palms 3-5 m apart for commercial planting, or singly as an ornamental. Water regularly for the first 3 years; mature palms tolerate some drought but fruit best with regular moisture. Mulch heavily. Apply palm-specific fertilizer (containing magnesium, manganese, boron, and potassium) every 3 months — nutrient deficiencies are common in alkaline soils. Prune only completely dead/brown fronds; never remove green fronds as palms need them for nutrient storage. Protect young plants from strong winds and full sun for the first year. Trees begin fruiting at 5-7 years and produce for 50+ years. Harvest fruits when they turn from green to yellow-orange (about 7-9 months after flowering); for chewing, harvest at the tender green stage (called "kalipak"). The fruits are boiled, sun-dried, and aged to produce different qualities of betel nut. A mature palm yields 200-500 fruits per year. In home gardens, the betel nut palm is also grown as a striking ornamental for its tall slender form. Be aware of the health risks of paan chewing before encouraging use of the nuts.
