Cantaloupe (Muskmelon)
Cucumis melo var. cantalupensis
📖 About this plant
Cantaloupe, also known as muskmelon or kharbuja in India (Cucumis melo var. cantalupensis), is a sweet aromatic melon in the Cucurbitaceae family — the same family as cucumber, pumpkin, and watermelon. Believed to be native to Persia (Iran) or India, cantaloupes have been cultivated for over 4,000 years and spread worldwide via Armenia and the Italian papal village of Cantalupo (from which the English name derives). The fruit is round to oval with rough netted skin (cantaloupes properly have netted rind; true cantaloupes with smooth rind are European) and sweet orange flesh with a central seed cavity. In India, muskmelon is one of the most popular summer fruits, grown extensively in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu — with the famous Lucknow and Saharanpur varieties prized for their intense aroma and sweetness. The fruit is incredibly refreshing in the hot Indian summer, eaten fresh, chilled, or in fruit salads, juices, and lassi. Cantaloupe is rich in vitamin A (beta-carotene), vitamin C, potassium, dietary fiber, and water (about 90%) — making it both hydrating and nutritional. Its low calorie density and high water content make it ideal for weight management and summer hydration. The plant is a warm-season trailing vine that thrives in sunny sandy soils, producing fruits 70-100 days from sowing.

💡 Care tips
- Direct sow seeds after soil warms to 25°C, 2 cm deep, 3-4 seeds per hill. Space hills 1-1.5 m apart in rows 1.5-2 m apart. Thin to 2 strongest seedlings per hill. Plant in full sun in sandy well-draining soil enriched with compost. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizer which produces vines at the expense of fruit — use phosphorus/potassium-rich feed. Water consistently during vine growth and fruit development; reduce watering 1 week before harvest to concentrate sugars. Mulch to retain moisture and keep fruits off soil (or place on a board/straw). Hand-pollinate female flowers (with mini fruit behind) using a male flower if bee activity is low. Harvest when the fruit slips easily from the vine with gentle pressure (full slip), the rind color changes from green to tan/yellow, and the fruit emits a strong sweet aroma at the blossom end. Cantaloupes do not continue ripening significantly after harvest — pick when ready. In India, sow February-March for summer harvest. Successive sowings extend the season.
