Champa (Champaca Magnolia)
Magnolia champaca
📖 About this plant
Champa (Magnolia champaca, formerly Michelia champaca), also known as Champaca, Joy Perfume Tree, or Golden Champa, is one of the most fragrant flowering trees in the world and a deeply revered tree in Indian culture. The tree produces small-to-medium (5-8 cm) yellow-orange to cream flowers that release an intoxicating, sweet, fruity-floral fragrance that can be detected from 30 metres away — the scent is particularly intense at dawn and dusk. Champa is the source of the famous “Joy” perfume (the world second-most-expensive perfume after Chanel No. 5), and the essential oil (champaca absolute) is one of the most expensive in the world, used in high-end perfumery. In India, Champa has deep religious and cultural significance — it is mentioned in the Ramayana and Mahabharata, is associated with Lord Krishna, and the flowers are offered in temples across India. The tree is also the state flower of Kerala. Beyond perfumery and religious use, Champa has significant medicinal value in Ayurveda — the bark, flowers, and roots are used to treat fever, rheumatism, gout, and digestive disorders. The wood is used for furniture and construction (similar to teak). The tree is large and evergreen, with a beautiful conical to pyramidal shape when young, becoming spreading with age. The tree is suitable for large gardens, parks, and temple courtyards — it needs space to grow to its full size. A single mature tree in bloom fills the entire garden with fragrance for months.

💡 Care tips
- Plant in a location with rich, well-draining soil and full sun to partial shade — Champa prefers morning sun with afternoon shade in hot regions. Provide 6-8 m spacing — the tree becomes large. Water regularly during the growing season; the tree is moderately drought-tolerant once established but produces best with consistent moisture. Apply compost or balanced fertilizer every 6-8 weeks during the growing season. Mulch heavily to retain soil moisture and feed the roots. Prune young trees to develop a strong central leader; mature trees need only light pruning to remove dead wood and shape. Trees start flowering in 5-7 years from seed, 3-4 years from grafted plants. Plant Champa near windows, patios, or outdoor seating areas to enjoy the intoxicating fragrance — a single tree in bloom fills the entire garden. The tree is suitable for large gardens, temple courtyards, and parks. Avoid planting in small yards or near foundations. Harvest flowers in the early morning when the fragrance is strongest — they can be used in floral arrangements or for essential oil extraction.
