Gambhari
Gmelina arborea
📖 About this plant
Gmelina arborea (white teak or ‘Gambhari’ in Odia, also called Kashmir tree) is a fast-growing deciduous tree of the Verbenaceae family. The tree is one of India’s most important fast-growing timber species — wood is yellowish, moderately hard, and used for plywood, packaging, pulpwood, and construction. The tree is extensively planted in agroforestry and farm forestry for short-rotation (8-15 year) timber crops. Fruits are edible. Leaves are valuable livestock fodder. Bark, roots, and fruits are used in Ayurvedic medicine. The tree is one of the ingredients of Dashamoola — the famous Ayurvedic ten-roots formula.
