Lantana
Lantana camara
📖 About this plant
Lantana camara is one of the most colourful and resilient flowering shrubs grown in Indian gardens, prized for its clusters of small, multi-coloured flowers that change colour as they age — creating a kaleidoscopic effect on each bloom cluster. A single cluster may have yellow, orange, pink, and red flowers simultaneously. Native to tropical Americas, Lantana has become naturalized across India (where it is also considered invasive in some regions, particularly the Himalayan foothills and Western Ghats) and is widely planted in gardens, along highways, and in urban landscaping. The plant blooms almost continuously in warm climates and is a magnet for butterflies — making it a favourite for butterfly gardens. It thrives in heat, drought, poor soil, and neglect — making it perfect for low-maintenance landscapes. However, Lantana has a darker side: it is listed among the world top 100 worst invasive species and can form dense thickets that displace native vegetation. In home gardens, it can be controlled by regular pruning and removing berries before they ripen and are dispersed by birds. Despite the invasiveness concern, Lantana remains one of the easiest, most rewarding flowering shrubs for tropical and subtropical gardens.
🧑🌾 Care requirements
Full sun
When dry (drought-tolerant)
Any (30-70%)
15-35°C
Wide tolerance — sandy, loamy, clay; pH 6.0-7.5. Tolerates poor soils.
Light feeder — apply balanced fertilizer 2-3 times per year. Excess fertilizer reduces flowering.

💡 Care tips
- Plant in full sun and well-draining soil — Lantana thrives on neglect and overwatering is the most common killer.
- Once established, water only during extended dry spells.
- Prune hard in early spring to control size and shape (it tolerates severe pruning).
- Remove berry clusters before they ripen to prevent self-seeding and bird dispersal — this is important to control the invasive potential in your area.
- Wear gloves when handling — leaves can cause skin irritation in some people.
- Lantana is salt-tolerant and perfect for coastal gardens.
- It attracts butterflies in profusion — plant near seating areas to enjoy the butterfly show.
- In containers, use a well-draining mix and a 12-14 inch pot.
- The plant is evergreen in frost-free climates
- in colder regions it may die to the ground and resprout.
