Mandarin Orange

Citrus reticulata

Fruit Plants & Bushes Difficulty: Easy

📖 About this plant

Mandarin orange (Citrus reticulata), known as santara or santra in Hindi, narangi in some Indian regions, and kinnow in Punjab and northern India, is a small citrus tree prized for its loose-skinned, easy-to-peel sweet fruits. Believed to be native to Southeast Asia and southern China, mandarin is one of the original citrus species from which many hybrid citrus fruits (including sweet oranges) have been derived. Unlike the navel and Valencia oranges (which are Citrus sinensis), mandarins have a characteristically loose rind that peels easily by hand, making them popular snack fruits. The fruits are typically smaller and flattened compared to sweet oranges, with a sweeter, less acidic flavor and a distinctive aromatic quality. India is one of the worlds largest producers of mandarins, with major cultivation in Maharashtra (Nagpur — famous for the Nagpur Santra, which has GI status), Punjab (Kinnow), Madhya Pradesh, Assam (Khasi Mandarin), and the foothills of the Himalayas. The Nagpur Santra is celebrated for its thin skin, juicy sweet flesh, and bright orange color; the Kinnow is a mandarin-orange hybrid developed in Punjab that is more cold-tolerant and a heavy bearer. Mandarins are rich in vitamin C (providing 80-90% of daily value per fruit), vitamin A, dietary fiber (especially if eaten with white pith), flavonoids, and antioxidants. In Indian households, mandarins are eaten fresh as a winter fruit, made into juice, used in salads and desserts, and the peel is used in marmalades, chutneys, and Ayurvedic remedies. The bright orange skin is also prized for its aromatic essential oils.

💡 Care tips

  1. Plant in full sun in well-draining sandy loam soil.
  2. Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, mix in compost.
  3. Plant grafted or budded trees (not seedlings — quality and fruiting time are inconsistent from seeds).
  4. Water deeply when top 5 cm of soil is dry
  5. avoid waterlogging.
  6. Mulch around the base (keep mulch away from trunk) to retain moisture.
  7. Feed with citrus-specific fertilizer every 6-8 weeks during the growing season
  8. supplement with iron chelates and zinc if leaves yellow.
  9. Prune in late winter to remove dead/crossing branches, suckers (especially below graft union), and to shape into an open-center form for sunlight penetration.
  10. Thin heavy fruit sets to prevent branch breakage and improve fruit size.
  11. Harvest mandarins when fully colored (orange, no green left) and slightly soft to gentle pressure — they ripen best on the tree.
  12. The skin should peel easily.
  13. In India, mandarins ripen October-February (winter season).
  14. A mature tree yields 100-500 fruits per year.
  15. Protect from frost when young
  16. mature trees tolerate light frost.
  17. Container-grown dwarf varieties (such as Calamondin) fruit well in pots.
