Mussaenda
Mussaenda frondosa
📖 About this plant
Mussaenda is a striking tropical shrub prized for its spectacular display of enlarged, petal-like sepals that create the illusion of huge, brightly coloured flowers. The actual flowers are small, yellow-orange tubes — but the showy sepals surrounding them enlarge dramatically into leaf-like structures in shades of pure white, soft pink, rose red, or salmon, often persisting for weeks. Native to tropical Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Philippines, Mussaenda is a beloved ornamental in Indian gardens, particularly in coastal and humid regions where it thrives. The most common cultivar grown in India is Mussaenda “Queen Sirikit”, which has creamy-white sepals flushed with pink and is named after the Queen of Thailand. Other popular cultivars include “Donna Aurora” (pure white), “Rosea” (pink), and “Aurea” (yellow). The plant blooms heaviest during the monsoon and post-monsoon season, providing colour when many other shrubs have finished flowering. Mussaenda is well-suited to mixed borders, foundation plantings, and as a specimen plant. With regular pruning, it can be maintained as a compact bush or trained into a small standard (tree form). The plant is also drought-tolerant once established and attracts butterflies with its nectar-rich flowers.

💡 Care tips
- Plant in full sun for maximum flowering — light shade produces foliage but fewer showy sepals.
- Provide rich, well-draining soil and water regularly during the growing season.
- Mulch heavily to retain soil moisture and feed the roots.
- Prune in late winter to control size and shape — Mussaenda tolerates hard pruning and blooms on new growth.
- Feed with balanced fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season.
- The plant is perfect for mixed borders, foundation plantings, or as a specimen shrub.
- In containers, use a 14-16 inch pot with rich potting mix.
- Pinch young plants to encourage bushy growth.
- The showy sepals last 2-3 weeks on the plant and can be used in floral arrangements.
- In cold regions, grow in containers and bring indoors before frost.
