Periwinkle (Catharanthus roseus)
Catharanthus roseus
📖 About this plant
Catharanthus roseus, commonly called Periwinkle or Sadabahar (meaning “always in bloom” in Hindi), is one of the most widely grown ornamental plants in India and tropical regions worldwide. Native to Madagascar, it has naturalized across the Indian subcontinent and is a staple in home gardens, parks, and urban landscaping due to its non-stop flowering, heat tolerance, and low maintenance. The plant produces a profusion of five-petalled flowers in shades of pink, white, magenta, and red throughout the year, even under harsh conditions. Beyond its ornamental value, Catharanthus roseus is medicinally significant — it is the source of vincristine and vinblastine, two chemotherapy drugs used to treat Hodgkin lymphoma, leukemia, and other cancers. In traditional Indian medicine (Ayurveda), the leaves and roots have been used to treat diabetes, wasp stings, and high blood pressure. However, self-medication is dangerous due to the plant toxicity. The plant is a perfect choice for low-maintenance colour in sunny borders, containers, hanging baskets, and as a ground cover.
🧑🌾 Care requirements
Full sun to partial shade
When top soil is dry
Moderate (40-70%)
20-32°C
Well-draining sandy loam; pH 5.5-6.5. Tolerates poor soils.
Light feeder — apply balanced fertilizer every 6-8 weeks. Excess fertilizer reduces flowering.

- botrytis blight in cool humid weather
- root rot from overwatering

- fungal leaf spots
💡 Care tips
- Plant in well-draining soil — periwinkle hates soggy roots and will quickly succumb to root rot.
- Do not overwater
- allow soil to dry between waterings.
- Pinch back young plants to encourage bushy growth and more flowers.
- Remove spent blooms to extend flowering.
- Plants self-seed readily — if you do not want volunteers, deadhead before seed pods form.
- In Indian summers, light afternoon shade in the hottest regions (above 40°C) will prolong bloom.
- Catharanthus is one of the few plants that thrives in poor soil and neglect — perfect for busy gardeners, balconies, and roadside plantings.
