Russelia (Coral Plant)
Russelia equisetiformis
📖 About this plant
Russelia equisetiformis, commonly called Coral Plant, Firecracker Plant, Fountain Plant, or Coral Fountain, is a graceful tropical subshrub prized for its cascading stems of brilliant scarlet-red tubular flowers that bloom almost continuously in warm climates. Native to Mexico and Central America, Russelia has become a beloved ornamental in Indian gardens — particularly popular for hanging baskets, retaining walls, cascading over banks, and as a sprawling ground cover. The plant has an unusual growth habit — the thin, rush-like green stems (which look like horsetail or bamboo) arch outward and downward, creating a fountain-like shape. The leaves are reduced to tiny scales, so the green stems themselves function as the photosynthetic organs. The brilliant scarlet-red tubular flowers (1-2 cm long) appear along the entire length of the stems, creating a fountain of fire that blooms almost year-round in tropical climates. The flowers are highly attractive to hummingbirds (in the Americas), sunbirds (in India), and butterflies. Beyond ornamental value, Russelia has medicinal uses in traditional Mexican medicine — the plant is used to treat skin diseases and wounds. The plant is extraordinarily easy to grow and propagate — stem cuttings root easily in water or soil, and the plant tolerates heat, drought, poor soil, and salt spray. The weeping habit makes Russelia perfect for hanging baskets, retaining walls, and cascading over the edges of containers. A yellow-flowered form (Russelia equisetiformis “Aurea”) is also available. The plant is also one of the best plants for attracting sunbirds and butterflies to the garden.

💡 Care tips
- Plant in full sun for maximum flowering — light shade reduces bloom.
- Provide well-draining soil and water regularly during the growing season.
- The plant is perfect for hanging baskets, retaining walls, and cascading over the edges of containers — its fountain-like habit is best appreciated when allowed to spill.
- For ground cover, space plants 60-90 cm apart.
- Russelia tolerates hard pruning — cut back in late winter to control size and encourage fresh growth.
- Feed with balanced fertilizer every 6-8 weeks during the growing season.
