📖 About this plant

Terminalia tomentosa (syn. Terminalia elliptica — Asan or ‘Sahaj’ in Odia, also called Indian laurel) is a large deciduous tree of the Combretaceae family. The tree is a critical host plant for tasar silkworm (Antheraea mylitta) cultivation — India’s commercial tasar silk industry is centred on Asan and Arjuna plantations in Odisha, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh. The wood is hard, durable, and used for furniture, agricultural implements, and construction. Bark yields tannin and a yellow dye. The tree is considered sacred in many tribal communities of eastern India.
