Thryallis (Golden Rain)
Galphimia gracilis
📖 About this plant
Thryallis (Galphimia gracilis, formerly Galphimia glauca), commonly called Golden Rain or Shower of Gold, is a charming tropical shrub prized for its long-lasting display of brilliant yellow, star-shaped flowers that bloom almost continuously in warm climates. Native to Mexico and Central America, Thryallis has become a popular ornamental shrub in Indian gardens — used as a hedge, foundation planting, specimen plant, or in containers. The plant produces upright spikes of bright yellow flowers at the branch tips, with each spike producing flowers in succession over several weeks — providing continuous colour from spring to autumn (and year-round in tropical climates). The flowers are small (1-2 cm) but produced in such profusion that the entire shrub appears golden yellow when in full bloom, earning the name “Shower of Gold”. The plant is evergreen to semi-deciduous, with small, bright green, oval leaves that provide an attractive backdrop for the bright flowers. Beyond ornamental value, Thryallis has medicinal uses in traditional Mexican medicine — the leaves and stems are used to treat nervous disorders, anxiety, and asthma. Modern research has confirmed sedative and anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) properties, particularly the compound galphimine. The plant is a magnet for butterflies and bees when in flower. Thryallis is one of the easiest flowering shrubs to grow — it tolerates heat, drought, poor soil, and urban pollution, making it perfect for low-maintenance landscapes in tropical and subtropical regions.
