🌼Tuberose

Tuberose

Polianthes tuberosa

Bulbs & Tubers Difficulty: Moderate

📖 About this plant

Tuberose (Polianthes tuberosa) is one of the most fragrant flowering bulbs in the world, prized for its intoxicating nighttime fragrance that has made it a cornerstone of the Indian perfume industry, wedding garlands, and religious ceremonies. Despite its name, it has no connection to roses — the name “tuberosa” refers to its tuberous root system. Native to Mexico, tuberose was brought to India in the 16th century and has since become deeply embedded in Indian culture — the flowers are strung into garlands (gajras) worn by women in their hair, used in weddings, and offered in temples. The essential oil extracted from tuberose flowers is one of the most expensive in the world, used in high-end perfumery (Chanel No. 5, Frédéric Malle Carnal Flower). The plant produces tall, slender spikes bearing clusters of waxy white flowers that bloom sequentially from bottom to top over 2-3 weeks. Each flower stays fresh for several days. The single-flowered form is more fragrant than the double-flowered form, but doubles last longer on the plant and in vases.

💡 Care tips

  1. Plant bulbs in spring after soil has warmed (March-April in India).
  2. Space bulbs 15-20 cm apart and 5-8 cm deep in well-draining soil.
  3. Bulbs need warm soil (20°C+) to sprout — do not plant too early.
  4. Feed every 2-3 weeks with balanced fertilizer once growth starts.
  5. After flowering, reduce watering and let foliage yellow naturally to allow bulbs to store energy for next year.
  6. Lift and divide bulbs every 3-4 years in winter when dormant.
  7. For continuous bloom, plant in succession every 2 weeks.
  8. The flowers are highly fragrant at night — plant near windows, patios,or outdoor seating areas to enjoy the scent.
  9. Cut flower spikes last 7-10 days in vases and fill a room with fragrance.
