Barkoli
Ziziphus mauritiana
📖 About this plant
Ziziphus mauritiana (Indian jujube or ‘Barkoli’ in Odia, also called Ber) is a small thorny deciduous tree of the Rhamnaceae family. The tree produces edible round to ovoid fruits that ripen from green to yellow-red — sweet-tart in flavour and eaten fresh, dried, or pickled. Ber is one of India’s most drought-tolerant fruit trees and is extensively cultivated in arid and semi-arid regions. Wood is hard and used for agricultural implements. Leaves are valuable livestock fodder. Fruits are rich in vitamin C and used in traditional medicine for coughs and digestive complaints.
