Leafhopper Vectors
Cicadellidae (various)
📖 Description
Several leafhopper species are critical vectors of phytoplasmas and other plant pathogens. The aster leafhopper (Macrosteles quadrilineatus) transmits aster yellows phytoplasma, which affects over 300 plant species including asters, carrots, and lettuce. Other species transmit viruses and bacteria that cause diseases in grapes, potatoes, and fruit trees. Because the diseases they spread are incurable, managing leafhopper vectors is essential for preventing catastrophic crop losses.
⚠️ Symptoms to watch for
- Aster yellows disease causing deformed, yellow flowers,Witch's broom growth on infected plants,Phloem discoloration and stunting,Purple/red discoloration of foliage,Sterile flowers with green petals (virescence)
🩹 Treatment
- Remove infected plants immediately to prevent spread (organic),Apply reflective mulch to deter leafhoppers (organic),Use insecticidal soap on nymphs (organic),Apply systemic carbaryl or permethrin (chemical),Spray with pyrethroid insecticides (chemical)

🧪 Chemical treatments
- Apply systemic carbaryl or permethrin,Spray with pyrethroid insecticides
🛡️ Prevention
- Control weeds that harbor leafhoppers near crops,Use floating row covers on susceptible crops,Plant trap crops like alfalfa around gardens,Remove plant debris at end of growing season
