Nantucket Pine Tip Moth

Rhyacionia frustrana

Borers, Mining & Weevils Insects High Risk 8-10 mm wingspan (adults)

📖 Description

The Nantucket pine tip moth is one of the most important pests of young pines in eastern North America, particularly damaging to seedlings and saplings in plantation and Christmas tree settings. Larvae bore into the growing tips of pine shoots, killing the terminal growth and causing deformation, forking, and reduced height growth. While mature trees can tolerate tip moth damage, repeated infestations on young trees can severely retard growth and ruin the form of Christmas trees. The pest is especially problematic in the southern United States where three to five generations per year occur.

⚠️ Symptoms to watch for

  • Brown, curled, or dead shoot tips on young pines,Pitch masses and webbing at shoot tips,Stunted and deformed growth in young trees,Multiple leaders or bushy growth from repeated tip damage,Small holes where larvae exited shoots

🩹 Treatment

  • Prune and destroy infested tips before larvae complete development (organic),Apply Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) to young larvae at shoot tips (organic),Use systemic imidacloprid as a soil drench on young trees (chemical),Apply permethrin or bifenthrin sprays during egg-laying periods (chemical)

🌿 Organic treatments

  • Prune and destroy infested tips before larvae complete development,Apply Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) to young larvae at shoot tips

🧪 Chemical treatments

  • Use systemic imidacloprid as a soil drench on young trees,Apply permethrin or bifenthrin sprays during egg-laying periods

🛡️ Prevention

  • Plant resistant pine species in areas with high tip moth pressure,Maintain tree vigor with proper watering and fertilization,Avoid planting pines in high-stress urban sites,Use pheromone traps to time insecticide applications precisely

🪴 Affected plants

  • Loblolly Pine,Shortleaf Pine,Virginia Pine,Scotch Pine

🦋 Natural predators

  • Parasitic Wasps,Birds,Spiders,Lacewings

🌱 Host plants

  • Pinus taeda,Pinus echinata,Pinus virginiana,Pinus sylvestris

🔄 Lifecycle

  • Nantucket pine tip moths produce two to five generations per year depending on latitude, with more generations in southern regions.
  • They overwinter as pupae in infested shoot tips.
  • Adults emerge in early spring and lay eggs on pine needles and shoot surfaces.
  • Larvae hatch in 5-10 days and bore into shoots, feeding for 3-4 weeks before pupating inside the damaged tip.
  • Multiple overlapping generations make continuous control challenging.

📅 Season

  • Spring to Fall (multiple generations)

🔎 Appearance

  • Nantucket pine tip moth adults are small, mottled moths with rusty-orange and gray forewings marked with irregular dark bands and silvery-white patches.
  • The hindwings are plain grayish-brown.
  • At rest, they hold their wings tent-like over the body.
  • Larvae are small, creamy-yellow to light brown caterpillars with a dark head capsule, reaching about 9 mm at maturity.
  • They are found inside pine shoot tips, surrounded by pitch and frass, causing the tips to brown and curl.
