Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle
Oryctes rhinoceros
📖 Description
Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle (CRB) is a major pest of coconut and other palms across the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and Pacific islands. Adult beetles fly to palm crowns at night and bore into the unopened spear leaves to feed on sap, leaving characteristic V-shaped cuts when the fronds unfold. Repeated attacks kill the growing point, leading to palm death. The larvae (grubs) develop in decaying organic matter — fallen logs, compost, manure pits, and palm debris — and do not damage palms directly. Sanitation of breeding sites is the foundation of CRB management, supported by pheromone-based mass trapping and biological control with entomopathogenic fungi.
⚠️ Symptoms to watch for
- V-shaped cuts on fronds from beetle feeding on the crown, holes in the unopened fronds, complete chewing of spear leaf killing the palm, oozing sap from the crown, deformed fronds as they unfold, stunting and yield reduction
🩹 Treatment
- Install pheromone (ethyl-4-methyloctanoate) traps @ 1/ha, treat breeding sites with Metarhizium anisopliae or Beauveria bassiana, drench crown with carbaryl 50 WP @ 5g/L, mechanically extract beetles from crown
🌿 Organic treatments
- Install pheromone traps @ 1/ha with light trap combo, treat breeding sites (compost, manure pits) with Metarhizium anisopliae @ 5g/kg, apply Beauveria bassiana in breeding sites, fill leaf axils with neem cake, manually extract and kill beetles from crown
🧪 Chemical treatments
- Crown drench with Carbaryl 50 WP @ 5g/L, spray Chlorpyrifos 20 EC @ 5 ml/L on breeding sites, soil application of Carbofuran 3G @ 50g per palm, Fipronil 5 SC crown drench
🛡️ Prevention
- Eliminate breeding sites (decaying logs, manure pits, compost heaps), decompose organic matter fully before using as mulch, install pheromone traps early, plant cover crops to suppress breeding sites, regularly clean leaf axils, quarantine movement of palms and organic matter from infested areas

🔄 Lifecycle
- Female lays 70-200 eggs in decaying organic matter.
- Eggs hatch in 8-12 days.
- Larvae feed on rotting material for 80-180 days, passing through 3 instars.
- Pupation occurs in an earthen cocoon, lasting 15-30 days.
- Adults live 4-9 months.
- Total life cycle 4-6 months; 2-3 generations per year.
📅 Season
- Year-round, peak adult activity during Apr-Nov warm humid period
🔎 Appearance
- Large black glossy beetles with a characteristic horn on the head of males (smaller horn in females).
- Adults are strong fliers.
- Larvae are creamy-white C-shaped grubs with a brown head, growing up to 80 mm, found in decaying organic matter.
