Red Cotton Bug

Dysdercus cingulatus

Sap-Sucking Insects High Risk 12-16 mm

📖 Description

Red Cotton Bug (also called Red Cotton Stainer) is a major pest of cotton across the Indian subcontinent. Both adults and nymphs pierce green and mature bolls, sucking sap from seeds and lint. The feeding causes characteristic yellow to red staining of cotton lint (hence ‘stainer’), reduces seed weight and oil content, and transmits Nematospora fungi that cause internal boll rot. Heavily infested bolls open prematurely, exposing lint to weather damage and reducing fiber quality. The pest breeds continuously on wild Malvaceous plants, migrating to cotton fields when bolls form. Late-maturing cotton varieties and fields surrounded by wild hosts suffer the most damage.

⚠️ Symptoms to watch for

  • Discolored and stained cotton lint
  • yellow and shriveled seeds
  • premature opening of green bolls
  • reduced oil content
  • transmission of staining and rotting fungi (Nematospora) inside bolls

🩹 Treatment

  • Handpick and destroy nymphs and adults
  • apply neem oil 5ml/L
  • use recommended insecticides at boll formation
  • destroy alternate host plants around fields
  • harvest promptly at maturity

🌿 Organic treatments

  • Handpick nymphs and adults on young plants
  • spray neem oil 5ml/L with sticker
  • apply Beauveria bassiana @ 5g/L
  • destroy wild Malvaceae around fields
  • set up light traps @ 1/ha

🧪 Chemical treatments

  • Lambda-cyhalothrin 5 EC @ 1 ml/L
  • Acephate 75 SP @ 1 g/L
  • Indoxacarb 14.5 SC @ 1 ml/L
  • Bifenthrin 10 EC @ 1 ml/L

🛡️ Prevention

  • Synchronize cotton planting in the region
  • destroy wild Malvaceous hosts (Thespesia, Sida, Abutilon)
  • harvest cotton promptly at maturity to avoid late-season infestation
  • deep plough after harvest to expose eggs
  • conserve predatory bugs and spiders
