Citrus Blackfly
Aleurocanthus woglumi
📖 Description
Citrus Blackfly is a major pest of citrus across the Indian subcontinent, particularly destructive in Nagpur mandarin belt, Punjab and South Indian orange orchards. Heavy infestation can completely blacken trees with sooty mold, devastating fruit quality and yield. Classical biological control with the parasitoid Encarsia perplexa (originally from Vietnam) has provided excellent control in many areas — when broad-spectrum insecticides are avoided. The pest prefers warm humid conditions and tender flush growth, building rapidly during spring and autumn flushes. Quarantine of nursery stock is critical because the pest spreads mainly through infested planting material.
⚠️ Symptoms to watch for
- Yellowing and curling of leaves, copious honeydew deposition on upper leaf surface and fruit, heavy sooty mold growth blocking photosynthesis, fruit blackening and reduced size, defoliation in severe cases, citrus yield loss up to 80%
🩹 Treatment
- Conserve native parasitoids (Encarsia, Eretmocerus), release Amitus hesperidum @ 5000-10000/ha, spray neem oil 1%, apply need-based insecticide avoiding bloom period to protect pollinators
🌿 Organic treatments
- Neem oil 1% + 5 g/L soap spray, release of Encarsia perplexa and Amitus hesperidum (classical biological control), Beauveria bassiana @ 5 g/L, fish oil rosin soap @ 25 g/L, remove heavily infested suckers and water sprouts
🧪 Chemical treatments
- Imidacloprid 17.8 SL @ 0.3 ml/L, Spiromesifen 240 SC @ 0.5 ml/L, Buprofezin 25 SC @ 1.5 ml/L, Diafenthiuron 50 WP @ 1 g/L, Triazophos 40 EC @ 1.5 ml/L — apply at flush stage
🛡️ Prevention
- Plant certified nursery stock, quarantine new plantings, prune and destroy infested water sprouts, avoid ants (they protect nymphs from parasitoids), maintain balanced nutrition, monitor with yellow sticky traps @ 10/ha, plant windbreaks to reduce adult dispersal
🪴 Affected plants
- Citrus (Sweet Orange, Lime, Lemon, Mandarin), Mango, Guava, Coffee, Grapes, Rose, Jackfruit
🦋 Natural predators
- Encarsia perplexa, Amitus hesperidum, Eretmocerus serius, Ladybird Beetles, Chrysopid Larvae, Predatory Mirid Bugs
🌱 Host plants
- Citrus sinensis, Citrus reticulata, Citrus limon, Mangifera indica, Psidium guajava, Coffea arabica
🔄 Lifecycle
- Female lays 30-130 eggs in spiral patterns on leaf underside.
- Eggs hatch in 7-15 days.
- Nymphs pass through 4 instars over 25-45 days.
- Puparium stage 8-15 days.
- Adult lifespan 10-30 days.
- Total life cycle 40-75 days; 4-6 generations per year.
📅 Season
- Year-round, peaks during spring flush (Mar-May) and autumn flush (Sep-Nov)
🔎 Appearance
- Adults are slate-black moth-like flies with smoky-grey wings; at rest they appear almost black.
- Eggs are yellowish-brown, banana-shaped, laid in characteristic spiral patterns on undersides of leaves.
- Nymphs are black, spiny, oval scales; pupae are glossy black with a white fringe of wax.
